The Pinto, Bobcat and Mustang II had the muffler as the last part of the exhaust system, except for about 5″ long down-turned tail pipe.
Two small “cherry bomb” mufflers in the system will quiet it down as long as you have enough tail pipe behind them. Even one will quiet it down if it’s closer to the engine and the tail pipe goes out the back of the car.
