    Guys:

The wing mirrors on my car look great but are pretty useless.  I have been searching for a alternative.  I spotted these mirrors in an article on the Meyers Manx (dune buggy) in Hemmings.  Before i run out and order them I would like some opinions on whether they will work.  they attach to the windscreen frame.  Anyone have a alternative solution?

Since my car (a CMC) is in Florida and I an in NY could someone measure their windscreen and send me the dimensions on the vertical posts. I will call the company and get their recommendation.

    Thanks

    Hi Mel.

I tried a windshield mounted rearview mirror (glued to the glass) to repalce the dashmoutned rearview mirror. It vibrated so much it was essentially worthless.

Mounting to the frame might be better, but I think they would have to be mounted low on the frame, like where it is bolted through the body.

I replaced the two fender mirrors with convex mirrors in the same style. Not perfect, but one you get them adjusted, you get a pretty clear view to both sides. Moss Motors has them for only $17.95 each. Plus $2.80 for two pads.

    Go to http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/SearchResults.aspx?SearchText =mirror&WebCatalogID=9

If the link doesn’t work, just go to MossMotors.com and search for mirrors for MG-TDs.

Hi Mel, I pulled up the site and those are great looking mirrors but very high $. It appears to me that by where they mount would interfere with the side curtains .You could make a bracket which would attach to the lower windshield post bolt and extend just to the front of the post . You could then use a clamp on mirror or drill a hole in the bracket and use a motorcycle  mirror. Since the mirror would then be an inch or two ahead of the post the side curtain would have room to contact the post as it was designed to do. You could also cut a notch in the side curtain to clear the mirror you found on the dune buggy site and that way would be the most attractive and would viberate less too.

    Good idea Dan.

Of course once the Harley mirror goes on the car, then come the tattoos, beard, leathers, doo rag, excessive drinking….Lord knows what else.

Guilty as charged on the doo rags. Only thing that’ll stay on on the road! No to the tats. Yes to the leather (jacket) for fall drives…and I have a heater (but who wants to put the top up?).

    Mel,

Missing in all the alledged jocularity is an actual answer to your question about the frame dimensions. I did not get a chance tonight but will try tomorrow (unless someone beats me to it).

I can tell you the shape of the inset on the mirror you are considering is correct in the way it tapers towards the front.

Just from memory, the windshield frame is about 1.25 inches. They don’t give dimensions on the web site you linked to. But the round is a four inch glass, one of the rectangles is two inches high. Comparing that to the clamp, makes me think you’ll be in good shape. The way the clamp appears to work, it also would allow for some leeway (depending on the length of the screws).

Another idea..the glue-on mount they sell could be attached to the side of the body, then you thread the mirror into that (avoiding drilling holes in the car)

    Mel,

I just did a bunch of wandering around dune buggy web sites. The more I see, the more I think the mirror you selected will work. At worst you might have to grind away a bit of the inner surface to match the exact contour of your frame.

    Guys:

I appreciate the feedback although some of the visuals presented about certain posters did cause my breakfast t…………:-)

Since my current separation ends in December, I will not do anything till the fall just in case more solutions present themselves.  But keep em coming
