Some of y’all got some fog (or driving) lights. I’m thinking I
want some too. My last fog lights were wired straight through the
switch with 16 gauge wire, which I’ve since learned is a bad idea.

So I want to know how some of yours are wired. What kind of relay
switch do you have? And how is the relay wired to the lights, and to
    the switch on your dash?

    Any guidance will be appreciated.

    Ed,

The theory is you don’t want the full 12 volt lighting power to go thru the switch since the switch is probably not up to the task powerwise and can burn out or cause a voltage drop.

A relay is nothing more then a switch that can handle to power without a voltage drop.  The dash mounted switch controls the relay.  The relay controls the power to the lights.

Take a look at these diagrams.

Make sure you use a separate ground wire on the lights, don’t trust the mounting bracket to ground the lights.

Here’s another good sight on using relays on lights
