I am familiar with the duct tape & bobby pin approach to automotive repair. And once in the middle of Mexico, I helped a cab driver repair the throttle linkage on a VW microbus with bailing wire (true story).
But this is the first official toilet paper roll fix-it story I’ve ever heard. Good thinking Dan.

I Love it!!!
If you’ve ever fixed your car with a toilet paper holder,.. you might be a genius!

June 26, 2010 at 12:25 pm #241689I’ll be lookin to do the same when I go thru my gas tank. My guage never reads higher than 3/4. New float for sure-and maybe a TP spring as well.
Of couse, having a working gas guage does make the car less “authentic.”
June 26, 2010 at 9:57 pm #241690ed ,,,,I think your float would be good ..if the hand only goes to 3/4 on a full tank and it works OK lower than that i would try to adjust it making sure the slider at bottom of the tank and the float arm at the bottom of travel showes empty on mine about 1.5 inches from the bottom of the slide adjuster give it a try ,,,the gauge is only an OHM meter the float arm rubbs on a coil of resister wire ..As for the spring to hold the float arm from jumping on and off the the resister coil it works good on mine GOOD LUCK ………Dan
June 27, 2010 at 8:25 pm #241691Thanks, Dan. I’ll definitely examine it before I buy parts. Hope you’re right.
June 28, 2010 at 12:18 pm #241692OK…instead of “My ride kicks butt”…it’s “My ride wipes butt”?
I couldn’t resist
June 28, 2010 at 6:12 pm #241693I guess mine is more authentic, gauge hasn’t worked since I bought it. Tried to get to it to check it out, it didn’t look possiable without removing the whole back of the car. Was on the list last winter but did the engine dress up instead. Maybe next winters project. For now, go about 100 miles and fill her up.
June 28, 2010 at 10:36 pm #241694I ran using the odometer as my gas gauge for 27 years.
The stock VW sending unit in my Duchess’ gas tank reached only half way into the tank. So “empty” meant half full!
This spring, I finally found a universal gauge with the correct resistance for the VW. Now I actually know how much gas I have!
Of course then the engine blew. (:

June 29, 2010 at 9:10 pm #241696Talked with the owner of one of the “best damn garages” in NJ today.
From my description of events, he thinks, the pushrod was working it’s way off the rocker arm and just before it dropped free, it got caught up on the rim of the pushrod cup. That would mean of course that the rocker arm would open the valve further than intended. Which would also introduce the valve and the piston in a rather unpleasant collision, thus bending the valve stem.
I’m starting to think this was a sign that I should drop a 1776 or even larger engine in the car.
Stay tuned.
