My new Road Trip

I just put together a road trip that has me leaving today with stops across the country on my way to New York City.  If we have any members in Detroit or New York City (or vacinity), I would love to see your car.  My route back to Phoenix is not set firm yet, but it looks like I might be going to Columbus, Ohio and either Nebraska or Oklahoma from New York.  I’d love to see your cars, even though I will be in a minivan.

Hi Mark,

I’m in Bath PA (formerly living in New Providence NJ). Both towns are right off Interstate 78.

There are marital complications that prevent me from having access to my TD at the moment. The car is still in New Providence. But stay in touch as hopefully those complications will be resolved.

HI guys and gals,
I made it to the Square Dance Convention in Detroit, then a long day to get to Brooklyn, NY.  I left with only my GPS and no maps for planning my routes, but getting to my destinations were top priority and required all of my time driving each day. 

On my way back west, I’ll  have a little easier schedule and would love to see Bridget and others.  I’ll be checking in from now until I leave, sometime around July 7.

This is a long journey, but combining my love of square dancing, seeing my girlfriend in New York, and then getting to meet some of you and your cars would be icing on the cake.

So far, I have made it from Phoenix to New York City and then back west to California.  I’m now in a town about 45 minutes north of Sacramento, CA and will try to make Santa Cruz tomorrow.

I got to meet Montie and his wife, and their car, Audrie in Ohio and Montie took me for a country ride.  What a beautiful area of gentil hills and two-lane road.  Audrie is a beauty!

Are there any members in Sacramento, The Bay area of San Francisco or any in California going south?

Thanks to all whom I talked with and visited (only Montie).  Several folk were willing, but timing was just off a bit for us.  Maybe next time, as many were willing to show me their projects.

I made it home tonight after an 8,000+ mile, five-week long trip from Phoenix to Chicago, Detroit, New York City, then west to Columbus, OH, Decatur, IL, Omaha, NE, Denver, CO, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and northern California down to Los Angeles before returning less than an hour ago.  Montie’s ride with me in Audrey is a great memory.

One thing I got from this trip is, try to avoid the Eisenhower Interstate System, unless time is of the essence or there is no other road.

Look for “Blue Highways: A Journey Into America” by William Least Heat-Moon

It is a WONDERFUL book. Post Divorce, job-less with almost nothing to his name except his van, Moon set off across the country.

“Blue Highways” is his story from the road, the places he went and people he met along the way.

If you remember the original portable GPS systems, they were printed on paper, they folded up, fit in your pockets. People called them “maps”.

Secondary roads on “maps” were in blue, hence the name of the book.

You made me laugh, Paul.  I’m sorry we didn’t meet up in person.  The only reason I could afford a 5-week trip is that I’m also unemployed at the moment.  I have a job interview on Monday, so I’m hoping that this will work out, finally.

I remember the paper GPS system.  Still use it today, as a matter of fact. When I was in New York (Brooklyn) I stopped into an AAA office and got maps and tourbooks, planning to make my way west on the old Route 66.  The unexpected phone call that drove me to California put the plans from Illinois on a new course.  I got to drive part of the old Lincoln Highway and stopped in Nebraska, I think it was, at a Pony Express Station.

Another book that my AAA office was unaware of is RoadTrip USA by Jamie Jensen. I found out about it online, but picked the only copy at a book store in Manhattan right before I headed west. If I didn’t have deadlines to meet at each end of the country, I would gladly have taken one or more of the routes in this book.

I’m already starting to plan my next trip.  This time with less luggage and a two-seater, sticking to the two-lane highways as much as possible.

Glad you got to stop here in Ohio while you were out this way.  It was nice meeting you.  Your welcome back anytime your out this way, maybe next time we will have more time.    

I’ll watch for that book next time I’m at the book store/Starbucks.   That two lane highway trip sounds good to me, so much of the country is missed on the interstates.  Whenever we go on vacation the side trips we stop at are usually better than what we do at our original destination.  There is lots of old attractions still out there almost forgotten.
