Im needing a cable for my speedometer. I have done a online search but all of them that I have found that tell the length are only 55 inches and that isnt long enough. Can any of you tell me were to get one long enough for our Vw based cars? Thanks
April 1, 2011 at 10:10 pm #244168I fogot to say that my car is a 1966 and that the speedometer is driven by the left front dust cap.
April 1, 2011 at 10:57 pm #244169I got a complete speedo cable assy from MG Magic. I also repaired my old one to use as a spare. If yours twisted off at the wheel like mine, you can drill out the twisted off cable, shorten the remaining cable by an inch or two and reinsert and crimp the old end back on.
April 1, 2011 at 11:25 pm #244170The instructions for my VW based TD say to get a speedometer from a VW Bus. They list the VW part number as 211 957 801E (81 1/2 inch long). They also list the gas tank, steering coupler, gear shift plate, and shift guide bushing with the VW part numbers. I usually use Airhead Parts, CIP1, Mid America Motorworks, or Bughaus for my VW parts. Oh…my TD is still unassembled and is a CMC FiberFab kit. Hope this helps ya out.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackApril 5, 2011 at 9:15 am #244171Thank you for the info. The cable for the older bus [ part no. ending in F ] seems to be tne one that matches what I need . It was shipped Monday so I should have it installed by the end of the week.
April 8, 2011 at 10:32 am #244172The cable came in yesterday and I got it instaled. It works great. Now I dont have to use my hand held GPS to tell how fast Im going.
Also from info on one of the other post I did some more work on my gas gauge. It now works. So now I not only know how fast Im going I also know how much gas I have to go with. Im really feeling up town.
Thanks for all of the help.

April 8, 2011 at 5:42 pm #244174That’s good info Charlie. I hadn’t known about the Bus speedo–thought it’s be way shorter ’cause of how they’re built.
