Saw this VW for sale on the samba site and am wondering what VW does this rim fit on

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 19, 2011 at 2:36 pm #243436Those’d fit four-lug Beetles, ’68 through 79, Karman Ghias of the same vintage, etc. New ones like it are $50 each at CIP1. Not sure what, if any, hubcaps fit though. Cip1 suggests a center cap of some kind that covers the grease cap but not the wheel bolts.
I think they’d be very cool if you could get a dog dish or half moon cap on ’em.
January 19, 2011 at 3:06 pm #243437Just adding a little to what Ed wrote….
The rim on the rear is a stock steel wheel used on 68-79 Beetles and 67-74 Ghia.
It’s a 15 inch wheel, four bolt, with 4 1/4 ” backspace.
It does NOT have the lugs or “ears” for a hubcap.

January 19, 2011 at 3:14 pm #243438I like the looks of these as they are a bit closer to original MGTD wheels. I saw some bus wheels on the samba for sale that had round holes but they were all 14 inch rims and we use 15 inch rims. My 74 74 Ghia didn’t have those rims and I changed to the 8-spoke rims when I did the rebuild.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 19, 2011 at 3:37 pm #243439Yup, the bus wheels have round holes.

And I never have understood why the bus has 14″ wheels and the beetle has 15s.

January 19, 2011 at 5:22 pm #243440I suspect it was to give the bus lower gears.
January 19, 2011 at 5:26 pm #243441As for lugs or ears for a half moon (or stock TD) cap, looks to me like that would be a custom job, maybe manageable with some very careful measurements and sheet metal screws. But looks like it’d be tricky for a home mechanic to get that stuff centered just right.
Then again, if the hump on the rim was just the right size, one might be able to fit a hub cap over that. Sock a couple-three screws into it from the outside for the hubcap’s grabber thingies to grab, and you’d be good to go.
No way to know without buying one and experimenting.
January 20, 2011 at 11:54 am #243442For reference: 4 lug VW rims are 4x130mm bolt pattern and use a 14mm lug bolt. The 5 lug are 5x205mm and use a 12mm lug bolt.
I recently had some 4 lug VW “Marathon” wheels (a.k.a. Baja Bug) widened to 8.5″ (stock backspace) and had them powder coated bright red. They are going on the rear of a Volksrod I am building.
When I needed center caps, I didn’t care what brand they were. I used the Summitracing website to get a stainless steel set that snapped right in. You can look them up by center hole diameter. You can get push-through or snap in and there are literally hundreds of center caps available for all types of wheels.
OEM VW Marathon wheel center caps are averaging $200 a set in so-so condition

January 20, 2011 at 11:59 am #243443What I’m hoping to find is a good VW rim and hub cap combination that closely resembles a TD wheel and hub cap. They sell VW rims with round holes but they are 14 inch rims and I’m not certain they would accept a hubcap. I’ll keep looking I guess. But the bug in VA is promising. Not sure if I want to make a 12 hr trip one way though. I’ll keep searching. Perhaps this weekend in northern GA salvage yards.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 20, 2011 at 1:43 pm #243444Those wheels on the rear in the picture appear to be Mexican Beetle rims. The fronts are not not the same wheels.
You can use the stock slotted VW wheels and get flat hub caps that fit them. Check out Paul Mossberg’s.
January 20, 2011 at 1:48 pm #243445This is somewhat off the subject here, but does anyone know how BCW adapted what appear to be VW wheels to their Chevette based cars?Chevette lugs are on 100mm center and VW on 140mm so it would seem they had to replace the center of the VW wheel [only the area behind the hubcap] or change the stud placement in the drums and rotors. This has bugged me for sometime and I thought someone may have found out how BCW did it.
January 20, 2011 at 2:58 pm #243446I’ve seen adapters used on VW wheels to fit Chevy or Ford rims but don’t know if the others have done that to fit VW rims.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 21, 2011 at 12:16 pm #243447Hey Larry,
I know that BCW used a 13″ flat chrome dish 4x100mm with the wire basket inserts on most of the Chevette based cars. I still have a set (minus the baskets) from your car. Nice bases for a sign post!
I have seen a few, like the one recently on Craig’s List in South Jersey, that had slotted VW “looking” wheels. I am not sure if they were really VW or not though. They may have been from an Opel or another RWD European car.
If they were indeed VW rims, I’ll bet they used adpaters. It’s not like they could re-drill the drums/rotors like they do with VW’s to change them to 5 lug Chevy and Porsche patterns.
Personally, I will not use wheel adpaters.

January 21, 2011 at 12:22 pm #243448Guys,
Just a slight correction – I believe the 4 lug VW wheels are 4×130 MM
Be carefull out there
January 21, 2011 at 12:53 pm #243449Exactly Schu..I fat fingered that one! Good eyes! I edited the post to read 4x130mm. Thanks

January 21, 2011 at 1:34 pm #243450Hey Mark, Thanks for the info. My London Roadster had 15” wire baskets with adapters to convert the VW pattern to the 4 3/4” chev . I just could not trust them and went back to VW wheels. You did a good thing when you put the US Steel wheels on the BCW. I see you have upgraded in the trailer department as well. Thanks for posting the picture.
schu, thanks for keeping the info factual.
January 22, 2011 at 10:16 am #243451I was lucky I got those US Wheels when I did. It’s harder to find RWD 4x100m steel wheels now than hen’s teeth! Nobody makes them anymore. You can sure find a “zillion” FWD 4x100mm wheels though.
I bought that old single axle open trailer (wooden ramps) from a fellow NJRC member. It was sitting in his business’ parking lot for several years. He had plywood and stuff on top of it and around the sides. It served as the local ferrel cat hotel. Paul Mossberg probably remembers. I had to install alll new treated lumber ramps, new wheel bearings/wheel seals and repair the electric brakes. It was great for fiberglass kit cars.
When I got my present 18′ Bri-Mar dual axle open trailer from my neightbor, I put that single axle unit on Craig’s List that evening and it was gone by 10:00 AM the next morning!
