So continuing my scientific method, after looking at the stuck caliper a minute, I had the idea to shim it.
I took the washers from under the bolts that hold the caliper to the mounting pointon the brake backer, and I put those washers between the caliper and said mounting point. The wheel spun freely now. So I test-drove it to see how it would do.… -

This needs to be out in the Hamptons or maybe the Carolina barrier islands. It is–or could be–an answer to all those w**kers stocking their summer cottages with Fiat Jollys to transport them to the club or the pier.
Paint it cream. In small, discrete letters along the door tops, paint the name of your summer compound, or your yacht.Wicker seats,… -

And. Update.
So I got the new bearing set installed last night. Things went together about as smoothly as could be expected.Because I’m a real thinker, I swapped the rotor hubs side to side. I did this because the dust cap on the driver’s side was WAY tight, while on the passenger side it was WAY loose. Flipped side to side, I figured, the caps s… -

OK, Jack, that looks a little worse than mine. See that gap where the front part meets the “pan” part? That is the bottom of the “Napoleon’s Hat,” which is meant to impart structural rigidity to the front of the chassis. That is an important part and needs to be strong for regular tooling around town–let alone auto-xing!
Moving forward from there… -

Oh, that is brilliant. I am laughing tears of joy and guilt once again.
I actually tried to get phone video of the moment Bill told Jack what he had done. Thought I had it but when I checked later I had bupkis.Jack was, indeed, extremely gracious. But frickin’ Wobby went over the top. Within a few minutes of the event, Wobby was dishing Jack a… -

Hey back on topic: does anyone have the Carlisle Auto-X results? -

Looks like they’re not as rare as I thought. Also here. $75, American. Auctions apparently sometimes bring more.
It would be hilarious if we all got them and made a video with them next year at Carlisle. Picture six-eight guys making tea at the side of their TDs, sipping from fine bone china, pinkie-up, and then snapping on helmets and repairing to… -

Needle nose vice grips?
Also, I think I tied some mechanic’s wire to the back side of it, and looped more around it through the shift hole. -

Moving the e-brake handle is not so bit a deal. Here is my step-by-step. This gets you something like what Abingdon intended, and you can mount your fire extinguisher on the tunnel where the e-brake came off. Weld a plate over the hold to keep the tunnel strong.
A slightly easier way to get a reachable parking brake lever is to cut a 90-degree… -

These voltage regulators all need to be replaced every 30-40 years. Mine went haywire two summers ago on the way to Pittsburgh. Luckily, the previous owner had stashed a spare under the passenger seat.

Sorry for your trouble Vicenc, and hope to see you and your car in Va beach. Just so you know–and I know it’s unbelievable, towing a broken car to the Marriott parking lot during Carlisle weekend is not only acceptable, but actually encouraged. VW experts abound, and cars get fixed–usually for free. And if for any reason a car can’t be made…[Read more]
