not sure which switch brand , but some I have come across requires the pin to be pushed in so the cylinder part (where the key goes) locks onto the switch mechanism.  sometimes you have to insert key and turn it so pin will go in

the first will only get going after I find a suitable chassis not about to chop my 66 beetle up yet
Its a whole 2 warehouses of inventory so I’m sure there will be plenty of “spares”
 
also got the Mercedes gazelle inventory but think the miggi is the way for me up first
