<p>Probably installed by a previous owner &#8212;  the purpose is to separate the hot air side of the engine from the cool side.</p>

Had to get a new frame head, new floor pans, sand blasted and painted the whole frame, front disc brakes also moved the e-brake lever to between the seats.<br />

I used to have a neighbor who figured out how to still import cobra kits &#8212; I believe he used several shipments of car parts.<br />

I don&#8217;t know for sure but the way to tell if it has an internal or external regulator may be by the number of terminals in the connector on top of the alternator.<br />

First use a 1000 grit followed by a 2000 or 2500 grit.<br />

To keep the engine cool you need to follow the design of the German engineers of the beetle by separating the cool air side of the engine from the hot air side.<span>  </span>I fabricated a floor and side walls for my engine compartment out of sheet metal and made sure all the engine cooling tin was installed.<br />

My 74 beetle assembly measures approx. 15 1/2 inches from shaft to shaft.<br />
