My Daytona MiGi has had a few tail light problems and I think that I just figured out why. (they are still a lot better than the Lucas lights on “real” TDs) MiGi has standard VW type tail lights. But there is no housing inside the fender to protect the electrics and contacts from the elements. Am I missing something? Is there supposed to be some sort of housing on the inside of the rear fender well? Perhaps some sort of boot? Thanks.
April 18, 2012 at 11:40 am #250191On my Duchess, the socket protrudes through the fender and I have no protective covering other than electrical tape covering the wire connections. Never had a problem.

April 18, 2012 at 11:45 am #250192Paul, that is what I had also. I’m sitting here with the tail light in my hand and it seems that there should be something better to keep the stuff that the rear tire throws up on it, but maybe not. On the VW, this tail light assembly screws into a small void that protects the bulb contacts, but not on the MiGi. Thanks anyway for the response, I’ll stop looking, clean this one up good and maybe spray some of that liquid rubber on it from inside the fender well once it is re-assembled.
April 18, 2012 at 2:11 pm #250193Reading the issue here. Is it possible to use the rubber boot that covers the end og the ebrake cable where it comes out of the VW chassis? I think they only cost about a dollar a piece. Anyway…just a thought.

I didn’t notice it because the whole inside had been sprayed with undercoating like material. Had a heck of a time getting the bulb out since the terminal end of the bulbs had some undercoating on them. Other than the placement of the “emergency brake” handle on MiGi, this is the only other area that I thought the manufacturer really cut a corner.

search lmc truck chevy 47-59 page 107 there is a tail light wiring gromet $4.95 each. This should give you what you are looking to acomplish.Although any make stepside tail light should have the same itemApril 18, 2012 at 4:25 pm #250196Thanks for going to the effort to try and help. That would, I think, not be much better since the guts of the business ends of the sockets would still be exposed. I expected to see a rubber boot or a small housing that was about the size of the tail light lens except backwards with a hole to feed the wires through and keep the mud, water and whatever else that the tires throw up off the light sockets. Maybe it’s not worth all the worry since I cleaned everything up and put it back together. Those contacts sure do get dirty and corrode being in the “elements”.
The way that I noticed this is that I was stopping for a red light and I pumped the brakes (don’t need to – it’s an old habit). There was a right turn available and the guy behind me thought I was turning. Almost rear ended me, but pulled up alongside, rolled his window down. Said, “nice car, your left brake light is out and I thought you were turning right”. I thanked him, of course, and we proceeded happily on our way.April 18, 2012 at 4:39 pm #250197Buzz, after further thought, maybe those “grommets” would be better. I would need 4 of them. I might put them on my non-critical to do list. Thanks.
April 18, 2012 at 4:48 pm #250198Roy I know dub front fender lights also Have what you are looking for.You could always hit your local pick and pull (salvage) and take a walk through and see if it’s worth the effort to remove old dry rotted boots.
Hey just hit me a short piece of heater hose and fill the end with silicone?
April 18, 2012 at 9:14 pm #250199I put led lights in my tai kites.Ran the wires out the hole and filled the hole with silicone.works fine so far.
April 18, 2012 at 9:30 pm #250200Smitty, I think I like your LED light solution. Sounds like a set it and forget it solution. LED’s seem to run forever without burning out. Are they bright enough? I wouldn’t want anything dimmer than what I have (1158 tail and 1157 brake & turn I think – hard to read)
April 19, 2012 at 8:32 pm #250201Roy I used the LED Retro fit kit from Mid America MotorWorks. They are very bright and pretty easy to install.
April 19, 2012 at 9:35 pm #250202Smitty, thanks for the lead. Unfortunately they are out of stock so I guess they go on my wish list and I’ll just run with what I have until…..
