A problem that i’ve had is vapor lock.Anything i read says heat related. My problem stopped as we started the fall season. Someone on here said i should start using a lighter weight motor oil which i will do .It was also suggested that i remove my spare tire cover.I will only do this as a last resort.Today i bought some stainless steel air vents that shined up nice, and cut a hole in the fiberglass 2 in. x8 in.Above the engine and covered it with the vent plate.I have looked at many vw air cooled cars and the all have vent above the engine .One other thing i also covered up a scratch by doing this and it also looks good.
November 8, 2012 at 9:54 am #252782Not certain but I beleive the vents in the VWs were to allow more cooling air into the engine compartment rather than to let heat out. I can see that working to let the heat out when the car is stopped or parked but forward motion would almost certainly ram air down through the vents into the engine compartment. A question I have is did you add some sort of screen device to prevent heavy rain from getting through the vents in to the engine? I likes me a nice and dry engine.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackNovember 8, 2012 at 9:55 am #252783You’re not going to get rain or wash water into those vents dripping on the air filter/carb or engine? The top of the engine cover/false gas tank is slanted so you have to make sure the louvers are placed in the right direction and also that air flow over that area doesn’t blow water inside.
Do you have the lower tins in place to separate the high temps below the engine from the air intake into the cooling fan? Have a doghouse cooler? Have a firewall in front of the engine? Having all the tins are just as important in lowering the engine compartment temp as making sure you have enough cooling air intake.
Do you have an oil temp gauge and does your engine run hot?
“Vapor lock” occurs in the fuel pump. not the carb, just so you know, and that may be another consideration for you.November 25, 2012 at 5:39 pm #252784Greg you may have already read this but in case you haven’t.
DanNovember 25, 2012 at 8:59 pm #252785Tex , Yes i had read it before and yes i reread it.It fits my problem to a tee every last word.I carry a bottle of water under front trunk and i am going to get reflective heat tape for fuel lines .I also moved the fuel filter. If i dont find a tin i am going put a muffler heat shield in this winter. Thanks
November 25, 2012 at 9:37 pm #252786Greg, – my 2c worth follows. Sorry, but I have to say that I think you are approaching this problem from the wrong direction. You have an engine heat problem. You have said that you have some/all missing tin. I really don’t know whether or not your engine is in a good state of tune.
I don’t exactly treat my TD with kid gloves. I get into it quite often and do not hesitate to fun it hard when it is hot outside and the sun is burning down. But I never worry about overheating or about vapor lock. I would have lost interest in my TD long ago if I had to live with the problems that you seem to be having. They are not normal. Especially in your climate.Tin is available. It may or may not totally fix your problem, but it is the first step that should be taken to correct your situation. If you would post some good pictures of the engine and what you have, I would be willing to try and find whatever tin you need in my local VW junk yard. It wouldn’t be free (even shipping is expensive these days), but it would be the very best investment you could make.Regarding tuning. I run my TD intentionally rich. I can lean it out, but it really seems to prefer a bit rich. I, consequently only get about 24 mpg. (And that is with a SVA distributor and a stock carb.) I seem to remember that in one of your early posts you bragged about your VW mechanic. Perhaps he is very good on totally stock VW’s but doesn’t know much about anything else and I seem to remember that you have a 1776 cc engine. Do you also have an aftermarket or upsized carb? Are you running a standard distributor? I know a VW mechanic who has never worked on anything except air cooled VW’s. He is very quick to tell you that he will not touch anything but a totally stock engine (somewhat of a purist, I guess)(a VW snob. Oxymoron?). Regardless of the answers to any questions in this paragraph, you need to:Get all the tin work that VW engineered for the T1 engine installed before you waste time or money with other band aid type fixes.…..Or bring your TD to Carlisle and “we” will get her running as well as she is able. With our very own TD “geek squad”. (But I wouldn’t touch it unless the tin is in place.)November 25, 2012 at 11:06 pm #252787Royal,I am in the process of selling an appt building i own.If the sale goes through it will free up alot of money and i should be able to do alot with this car and possibley buy a vintage Benz.If all happens as i hope i plan on coming to Carlisle and maybe we will do just that .I would love to meet all of you.As you probaby know i’am not a motor head .I just love old cars
