Cruising about over the past week I noticed a bit of a noise coming from the front of the car, something like a low tire sound. Thought I’d throw some air in her today but couldn’t locate my little air gauge right off. Took out my grease gun to shoot a bit into the beam tonight and look for fittings elsewhere when I thought: why not check the bearing play in the front wheels–just for sh*ts & giggles.
Sure enough. The tell-tale wobble. It was almost too subtle to notice. The wheel spun true and quiet too but I pulled off the grease caps anyway and there they were: shavings in the grease.
So Bridget is hereby laid up until I can score a full set of front wheel bearings and a nice greasy tub of grease.
Anyone know which (if any) of the local parts houses is likely to have these? I’d rather not have to on-line order them and wait for a shipment from CA.
April 1, 2013 at 9:30 pm #255316Ed I’ve had good luck with our local NAPA store. I’d give your NAPA store a try. They seem to have everything I need for my VW chassis. My .02 worth anyway. newkitman2013-04-01 21:32:19

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackApril 2, 2013 at 10:18 am #255317Ed, I think I got mine from my local Auto Zone or Advanced Auto – if they don’t have in stock they can usually get in one day.
April 2, 2013 at 11:22 am #255318Thanks, guys. I might just go ahead and upgrade to discs while I’m at it. Found a local guy selling a still-in-box kit with the spindles, calipers and rotors for $200. Says he’ll be home Sunday & I can get it then.
I believe the kits come with all the bearings. A bit more work than bearings alone but I was pondering this change anyway so might as well do it just the once.
April 2, 2013 at 11:27 am #255319Ed When you do don’t forget the brake tubes and hoses. I beleive they are different on discs setups than drums and shoes. newkitman2013-04-02 11:29:01

Slowly coming back from the ashes...April 2, 2013 at 7:04 pm #255321Not mistaken, Kent, but supposedly it doesn’t matter.
Anyway looks like the disc kit I’m buying is short the bearings so I bought a set at Pep Boys on the way home from work. I’ll get after it tonight.

April 3, 2013 at 1:30 pm #255323Just happen to have wheel bearings and seal numbers from NAPPA. oil seal no.550154 bearing no.6206j.Mine is a 85 LR .There was a year there that they changed i belive to be between 1968 and 1970 we had to exchange first one Just a little info there was a assembly diagram posted by newkitman on oct 14 2012 be carful of the snap ring. The wheel bearing i beleve was put in when axel was off the car with some kind of a press. My mechanic built a press that attached to the wheel and was able to press it in . It took him about 4 hrs including the press he built snap ring was biggest problem because he didnt know it was there .
April 3, 2013 at 9:28 pm #255324If you are going from Drum/Drum setup to Disk/Drum in front/back then you will need a proportioning valve made for a disk/drum setup. This is to balance the rear drum, which is less efficient, with the front disks, which are more efficient so the fronts don’t lock before the rears.
April 4, 2013 at 6:42 pm #255325bearings done. I’ll do the discs later.
