I guess this subject should go in this topic. This is not really a kit car as I understand it. I have run across this car and thought I’d pass the info along. The car is a 1982 PUMA two seat roadster. It has been sitting in a garage basically since 1991 (last inspection sticker on the windsheild). As I understand the PUMA was a VW Type 1 based car that was mfgd. in Brazil at the VW factory and came as either a coupe or roadster. It has a fiberglas body. Other than being covered in dust, the car looks to be in basic good condition. The owner was going to restore it, but due to health issues he is not going to be able to do it. The car is located in Durham, NC and looks like it would be a nice restoration project for a VW based car fan. He says he has $3K in it and is asking $3K for it. According to the owner, the convert. versions of this car are rare. Just thought I’d pass this along in case any of you are interested or know of anybody that might be interested. If there is interest, contact me and I’ll give you his contact info.

My understanding is that it wasn’t actually made by VW, but rather a VW-owned subsidiary.  But it was imported to the US, fully assembled, to be installed on a stock VW Karmann Ghia floorpan, similar to the Lafer for the Beetle floorpan — to avoid US bumper and smog restrictions. In Brazil and other countries, they were sold as finished cars.

I don’t recall ever seeing a convertible firsthand, though I’ve seen the coupes.  They are beautiful cars, with a level of fit and finish that makes these kits look crude.  They’re “real cars” and if equipped with a modified VW drivetrain, would compete very well with 4-cylinde Porsches in comfort, drivability, handling, etc.

KentT, yes this is the car. The red convert pictured in the article is what this guy has…except his is black with a lot of dust on it. Probably would need a repaint job.

Schu, you must have me confused with someone who has limitless funds.  Even with my military and senior citizens discount, putting this Judson “AutoX Special” supercharger on my MiGi has tapped me out.  LOL
