I’ve been thinking that the rubber grips on my turn signal stalk and tilt wheel lever where just about the ugliest things on my roadster, so after work today I fired up the lathe and came up with something more pleasing to the eye. Just cosmetic, I realize, but certainly more satisfying.

What is the tilt column out of?Bill Ascheman

September 2, 2014 at 8:12 pm #261303The column is out of a Chevette. A previous owner had shortened the signal stalk and bent it away from the steering wheel, so every time you signaled a left turn the stalk twisted counterclockwise and and on went the wipers.
The engine is a Ford 2.3, so this car was apparently the original hybrid.
September 2, 2014 at 8:35 pm #261304Well-done, Dave.
September 2, 2014 at 9:24 pm #261305Thanks for the kind words, even the reference to the knobs.
September 3, 2014 at 2:12 am #261306I felt the same way about that fat Chevette column. I tossed it and made a simple one.

January 25, 2016 at 3:07 pm #261307Is that the Chevette Column stripped of all the plastic, or did you install a completely new one?

South Orange NJJanuary 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm #261308I did the same with my column. I put the switches on the dash and used a chrome steering shaft.
February 21, 2016 at 12:55 am #261309I took the Chevette shell and pulled it off the shaft. Then made a tube out of steel to hold the shaft.
I moved all the switches to the dash.
I’ve been looking for a brass acorn nut to dress up the wheel adapter but it’s still on the ‘to do list’.
