Confusing part is that only one web site I can find shows that engine series.Perhaps there is some truth to the post I found about non-USA engine options.

Never noticed that before– AB code 1972AB
1971/73
1300cc – dual portDual port. Cool! I wonder if it’s a dual relief case with a doghouse shroud too. If so it should be absolutely bulletproof. -

Not sure why the links above are not working.I just verified both url’s directly and they are correct. Here’s another VW engine code decoder:http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/year_model.htmI don’t see your engine number on the list. And at the risk of repeating myself, I did look at the page you posted, http://www.vw-resource.com/years.html…and am…[Read more]

Mike,Apologies. We were not very clear. The chassis number (which was also the VIN of the donor Beetle) is on the TOP of the tunnel, under your seat, right next to the oval access panel used to provide access to the linkage at the front of the transmission.Picture is facing the rear of the car. Stock battery location is to your left in the…[Read more]

Thanks to all for your replies!
My engine number is AB399145. According to a site called vw-resource.com/year, it lists the motor as a 1972 (Aug 71 to 31 July 72) 44bhp(DIN)1300 motor. The other sites don’t even list an engine number with an AB prefix. I’m really puzzled. I looked for several days, on and off, to try an find what the motor is. I… -

As you probably already know, the VW’s speedometer drive is off the left front wheel. The VW speedometer also runs at a different ratio as compared to most other cars which drive the speedometer off the transmission. Most mechanical speedometers made today require an adapter to correct the ratio to give accurate readings.Back when our cars were…[Read more]

Welcome aboard Mike.No such thing as a 1972 1300cc. If your engine is a stock ’72, it will be a 1600The chassis number is stamped into the center tunnel near the access panel for shift tube connector (under your seat).Classic Roadsters used a unique wing bracket so that you can fold the wings against the windshield and more easily fit a car cover.…[Read more]

If you need a new wind wing, you can remove the passenger’s side and have a shop cut you out a new one to match. Still have the bracket on the window frame.

Mike, I know you will have lots of fun with your new toy.
Most TD replicas use the complete wiper assembly from the VW donar car. Oreilly Auto can order the wiper arms and blades. If by ”driver’s side glass” you are referring to the wind wing,I think Classic Roadster used a slightly different bracket than most other kits . You may end up… -

MikeD, Welcome to the forum. I’m sure that you’ll enjoy your “new” TD. They’re a ton of fun. Can
not help you with the bracket. Try MG Magic they try to stock parts. Your chassis #, hopefully, is stamped under the seat on the tunnel. You can use that to determine the year of the vehicle. I do doubt that your engine is a 1972 1300cc. … -

Do you have the tin in place underneath the engine? I also put in a galvalume metal panel made from a sheet of roofing material as a firewall in front of my engine, and it runs much cooler now according to my oil temp gauge. This is the way the VW’s were originally designed and I think it works well. Plus I have the newer doghouse fan and oil…[Read more]

Yeah, I was looking at that. But I think exhaust heat from nearby pipes is going to heat everything there, whether there’s an oil filter or not. Probably best to plumb a remote cooler/filter to a spot up front, but I think of those spin-on dealies made things worse there wouldn’t be so many out there. Didn’t late Mexican engines all have a similar set up?

Glad you finally found it – it had to be a ground problem like I first said. Electrical issues can be a bear to find – you have to check the entire circuit beginning to end to find the problem and many times visual inspections do not do the trick, you have to take things apart, tug on wires, use a meter to check for continuity, etc.. It’s usually…[Read more]

Ed, I adapted an old 2 jaw gear puller for the pulley. Bought a pump puller (pretty cheap) to get the pump casing out. You may be able to get the pump casing out without one, but I was being careful not to damage any sealing surface. I almost installed one of those external oil filter/pump combo things but was concerned about interference wi…[Read more]

Yes, Looks like a $40-$50 pump and a pulley puller get it done. I’ll be watching the gauge.

ZDDP. That’s the reason that I’m using VR1. Not that I have any opinion on ZDDP but I just read so much about it (either here or on Samba) that I figgered “couldn’t hurt” eh? And I did go from 20-50 to 10-30 with my oil pump replacement (installed either a 26 or a 30mm -I’d have to read my old posts. Change was easy.)
