OK,  now that it was off the ground, used jack in front, instead of lift, rhe vw needs ball joints.  Looks like a lot of work, per Chilton.  Can they be replaced without taking apart the brakes, wheel, torsion arm etc?   Thanks for any help….Dennis P

Pretty sure I did not have to take the brakes and stuff apart to replace the whole front beam. I did have the control arms off though, even though I didn’t need to do that either.

Looks like you just need to disconnect them from the wheel with a ball joint separator (a pickle fork will do, since you’re replacing them anyway and so not worried about damaging them) and unbolt the control arms from the torsion spring pack & slide them out.

    Then the fun begins.

The ball joints do require the heat wrench for removal, near as I can tell. Then a gabillion pound press to install the new ones, maybe with aid of the heat wrench then as well. That’s why I still have my old ones for now.

Good luck & let us know how it rolls.
