Looking for a MG TD type banjo steering wheel..ie flat 14″ for a V W
jebarry 2012-03-04 20:35:07 March 4, 2012 at 9:18 pm #249625Do a search, my brother. We just were talking about this under “Spanning.” Cip1 has the Flat Four wheel for $310.
It’s a 16-inch diameter and, I believe, it will bolt to an older Grant
hub adaptor, saving you from spending $90 more on their hub kit. You’ll
still need a horn button though, and Flat Four wants another $90 for any
of theirs. I’d say it’s a DIY item: get a bit of aluminum plate and
bolt a bit from an old style Honeywell thermostat to it–looks like a TD steering
center “dome.” Glue an MG logo in the center and yer good to go. Note the resemblance.Another option is to pick up a TD wheel and make it fit. I believe that would be doable. But I have no idea how, exactly.

March 5, 2012 at 1:17 pm #249631Pricey, but here is Grant model 1057, a 14 3/4 inch, banjo.
The page says four inch dish. But I am not sure about that. A page from GrantProducts.com from years ago says it is a four inch dish WITH the spacer between whell and column. And the photo looks “flat”. And I recall a conversation with a Grant customer service person years ago. And he said it was flat.Grant does have adaptors for VW steering columns.I emailed Grant customer service to ask about the wheel specs and will update this post when they reply.Paul Mossberg

March 5, 2012 at 1:33 pm #249632Thx paul i just love the retro look of the MG banjo wheel.. I have seen two MG banjo wheels on Ebay ..
DO yo know how difficult or pricey to convert to the VW column? Also do you know what size front shocks you have on Duchess? I think we have the same style ie 45 degreesthx zz so muchMarch 5, 2012 at 2:27 pm #249633Ed’s the source for adapting the MG wheel.
Stock VW shocks. Nothing fancy, no gas shocks. There have been many discussions here about VW suspensions. The accepted best-practice is stock shocks.Paul Mossberg

March 5, 2012 at 3:14 pm #249636I heard back from Grant.
The Grant model 1057 has a 14/3/4 inch diameter and a 3 1/2 inch dish., I thought it was flat. And in reponse to a follow-up, they do not have anything similar with zero or minimal dish.Double .PMOSSBERG2012-03-05 15:15:39

March 5, 2012 at 8:22 pm #249638MG TD steering wheels have a keyed fitting for the shaft. VW Bugs have splined shafts. Early and late differ, but I’m not sure how.
So getting a TD wheel on a Bug steering shaft means finding a way to mate the keyed fitting to the splined shaft. Depending on the diameters, it might be as simple as cutting the bug shaft for a tap-in key and grinding on a couple fender washers to hold it under the nut. But it’s more likely to be a nightmare involving lathes, precision welding, and two or three ruined parts.
BTW, all this assumes you’d get rid of the whole fatass ignition switch/turn signal/highbeam switch mechanism which clamshells around your VW steering shaft, relocate those functions elsewhere, and get a new u-bolt system to hang the steering shaft from something strong under your dashboard.
Anyone else still game? 🙂
March 5, 2012 at 8:52 pm #249639Lol. Thanks Ed thats all I needed to know. I. Do appreciate your knowledge and help

March 6, 2012 at 11:59 am #249646Fixed the link John.
That is the wheel you see in a lot of Speedsters. Would look pretty close to a TD wheel. My only caution, check your clearances. And I don’t mean the wheel to the dash. I mean the wheel to the driver’s lap!An inch or two diameter increase in the wheel might not sound like much. But it could make things pretty tight in there! I’m just sayin’….Paul Mossberg

Thank you for the help..I checked the clearance on my London Roadster..I beleive our seats or mine(bench) is a bit higher than some MG TD and replicas.the flat dish grant wheel i have now is @14 inches. which makes the Flat 4 Banjo Steering Wheel (IVORY) 15 1/2″ doable (i think) not too sure how far the hub and adapter extends out on the Flat 4 .I will make a template and see how the clearance works..I saw Ed’s steering wheel and is very Nish…but pricieeeeAgain thanksjebarry2012-03-06 12:14:05
March 6, 2012 at 2:00 pm #249648John, as I said, I like the Flat 4 a lot. If I were going to try it, I’d buy just the wheel and see if it will bolt to your existing Grant adaptor hub. I believe it will. The $90 part Flat 4 sells as an adaptor is meant to raise the wheel off the dash (like a dished wheel) so it will clear the turn signal switch. Don’t buy it. (Not yet, at least). We TD guys don’t want to do that; we already modded our turn switch & want the steering wheel to be as close as possible to the dash.
I’d skip their $90 horn buttons too, pretty as they are. Try to make something that looks more TD-ish out of your existing Grant button & maybe some parts you have around the house. I ended up rigging my horn to a button on the dash, as the originals had.
Like Paul said, the big wheel adds up–or subtracts up, I should say–in terms of lap room. My Bluemels Brooklands copy is an inch-plus bigger than the Flat 4. It will bolt up to the existing Grant hub, however. Mine just needed to be taken apart so I could drill out the center hole in the top plate. 10 minute job.
Good luck.
