Hi, Anything out there re. more respnsive steering and smaller turning circle for these VW kits???? thanks for any info, Dennis P
You might be able to get it tighter by adjusting the steering stops. There is a bolt and a stop nut near the pittman arm attached to the beam.
There’s really not much you can do to significantly change how the front suspension is designed and how it works.
There is an aftermarket quick-steering kit that essentially increases the length of the pittman arm, meaning less distance is required when turning the steering wheel to get the same front tire movement for steering. It will also increase how far the wheels can be pointed in each direction, when the steering wheel is fully cranked to one side or the other, yielding a slightly smaller turning radius:A few thoughts/cautions on using one:1. It is marked “For off-road use only” because it has not gone through the same testing as the OEM steering setup. This marking is somewhat “cover your backside” for the manufacturer, and somewhat a warning to the buyer…2. If you are already using a smaller steering wheel than the factory 15″, you are already getting quicker steering than original.3. Quicker steering means more effort required to turn the steering wheel when stopped or moving slowly.4. Should you install one, check for clearance of fenders and the front torsion tubes and swing arms with the steering at its limit in each direction. Something may rub, that formerly did not… if it does, adjust the steering stops that Ed mentioned to prevent that.5. Make sure to use Grade 8 bolts (normally come with the kit)6. You should have the front end aligned after installing one, since you’ve most likely changed the toe-in…With all that said, I ran one on a bug for several years with a 14″ steering wheel… it made things like parallel parking more difficult, but made the driving feel much sportier because the steering was more responsive to the steering wheel movement…Your mileage may vary…KentT2013-06-17 22:29:13
