During a drive yesterday my speedometer started going nuts, then stopped working totally.
I’ve had issues with the dust cover in the past, so it was the first thing I checked. It’s still nice and tight, so I think the cable is broken.
Any one replaced it?
I watched the YouTube vids and it looks fairly easy and straight forward.
Thanks Again!Amor Conquista Todo

A VW?
Easy peasy.
Pop the left front wheel wheel cover. You will see a c-clip on a rod sticking through the hub. Remove the clip, pull the speedo cable out from the back side.
On the back of the speedo, unscrew the retainer, pull the cable from the speedo.
Depending on the size of the hole through your firewall, you may have to pull the cable from the car via the passenger compartment.
Reverse the above to install the new cable.

October 31, 2015 at 1:25 pm #266015Steve. I agree with Paul. AND…once you pull the left front wheel cover you’ll either see the c-clip or you might see a cotter pin depending on the year model of the VW. If you don’t see either problem solved.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackOctober 31, 2015 at 3:23 pm #266016If you need one, get the Bus cable. It’s long enough to make the bends nice and easy. Hey guys, I forget–do we grease these or just drip a little motor oil or 3-in-1 down into the sheath?
October 31, 2015 at 3:35 pm #266017I clean it well with brake cleaner and then wipe it down the entire length with grease.
November 2, 2015 at 1:52 pm #266018What do you guys think of the electric conversion for the VW kit?
November 2, 2015 at 2:02 pm #266019If my speedometer didn’t work, I’d consider them. But too pricey for me.
November 2, 2015 at 2:46 pm #266020Seems a strange “improvement” for one of the few things on a Bug that doesn’t need it.
November 2, 2015 at 3:01 pm #266021I purchased a replacement speedo cable, but when I looked at it, I discovered it is about 2 feet too short!
Would they have used a VW Bus cable instead of a Beetle?
That’s all I can think of as why it’s so much shorter.Amor Conquista Todo
November 2, 2015 at 3:03 pm #266022Since my original speedo gear was broken, and the replacement gear gave the wrong info, I was tired of dealing with it and therefore went for a GPS speedometer:
http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR4.5-GPS-15/1/GPS-Speedometer-Gauge-80mphAt $294, it is “pricey” although I bought a package of new gauges from them and didn’t pay nearly that much for the speedo alone. In any event, it is near foolproof, extremely accurate, and cheaper than paying a mechanic to try to sort out the old unreliable mechanical one. And due to the ability to customize, you can get a gauge set that looks very period-correct compared to the FiberFab originals.November 2, 2015 at 3:47 pm #266023Steve…
Yes. You need a Bus cable.Compared to a Beetle, our TDr dash is several feet to the rear. Remember, we are sitting where the rear seat was in the donor Beetle.Paul Mossberg

November 2, 2015 at 8:22 pm #266024I said that & gave the link!
November 2, 2015 at 10:10 pm #266025Ed, I saw your advice, but it didn’t click.
The replacement cable I bought from a friend, so I got it cheap.
I’ll get one from one of those who you linked.
Thanks!Amor Conquista Todo
