I’m still working on this issue. I plan to pull the carb and go over it again and probably will make the main jet mod suggested by Ed (drill out the main jet to .052″). Additional suggestions have lead me to also changing the distr. from the mech. adv one I now have back to the vac. adv. model which leads me to the following question(s). I still will have the 30 pict 3 carb and the manual I read indicates that the 71 engine had a vac adv./mech adv. distr., but I think I read somewhere that the 30 pict 3 carbs used vac only distr. So the question is, if I buy a distr. for the 71 engine ( I’ve found a rebuilt one at Advance Auto for a ’71 engine) will it be ok with the 30 pict 3 carb.? Also, if I go with the vac. distr., how is the vac. connection made from the distr. to the carb.? I haven’t been able to find anything that shows how this connection is made so that I’ll do it correctly. Thanks.

October 6, 2013 at 12:04 pm #255368Sam, I’m quite sure that the only mechanical differences between 69 and 71 are oil passages, doghouse cooler with a bigger fan, 8mm head bolts, dual port manifold and heads and the carb being the 34PICT with vacuum advance and retard distributor (two vacuum hoses). The 30 carb, found on the 69 VW, has a fitting for SVA distributor on the port side and it works well with the SVA. This SVA has no centrifugal advance and I just bought two SVAs on ebay cheaply which were described as “centrifugal advance is broken”. Not so! There simply is none, and there is not supposed to be. Since you are going to a 30 carb, I would go to the SVA which was made to work with this carb. Worked well for me and I just put one of my old SVAs on Happy Jack’s car. He was having the same troubles you describe. A SVA fixed it quickly. Royal2013-10-06 14:03:35
October 6, 2013 at 1:43 pm #255369Man…nothing is ever easy. You confirmed what I was afraid of. I still have the new 34 pict carb that I was thinking of using when I rebuilt the engine.( I had a ’71 beetle years ago and never had the issues with the 34 that many have mentioned) So now it looks like I have to make a choice now on which carb to use or I’ll be buying another distr. if I change to the 34. I looked on eBay and didn’t see any sva distr. at this time.

October 6, 2013 at 2:45 pm #255370Sam, I just checked ebay and found at least 3. What, I believe, you want is a 113 905 205T or a 231 137 035 or 036. The first number is a VW # and the second two are Bosch #’s. The distributors are the same, just different numbers. See: http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm
October 6, 2013 at 3:21 pm #255371Sam, I may have one for you. Will have a look.
BTW, mine’s an older engine, 1500 single port wiuth a newer 34 PICT3 carb and vac advance distributer. I put a Pertronix module in a couple years back and it works well.My car came with a spare disty & if it’s what you need you can have it for shipping.Stay tuned.October 6, 2013 at 4:44 pm #255372Ed, yes I would be interested if you have an SVA distr. Also, with your 34 PICT3 carb I assume you are running the SVDA distr. Correct?

October 6, 2013 at 7:06 pm #255373Looks like a plain old SVA to me–for all I know. The vac canister works. It says “BOSCH” on the bottom. No play in the shaft. The points are pretty well shot. Yours for shipping, if you want.
edsnova2013-10-06 19:06:50October 6, 2013 at 7:17 pm #255374Sam, if you can get Ed to suck on the canister and verify that the points move, it’ll probably work for you. If the point plate doesn’t move, then replacement vacuum canisters are more expensive than a used dist with working (but used) canister installed. Only trying to help here.
October 6, 2013 at 8:57 pm #255375Ed, if it works per Roy’s suggestion, I will gladly pay the shipping. Also, still curious about the distr. you are using with the 34 PICT. Let me know how the test works out and I’ll get with you on shipping payment. Thanks for your help.
