Have a 1600cc dual ported carbureted engine. Read that a one point VW offered a Bosch D-Jetronicfuel injected option. It that still an option with an after market supplier. Know that Mid America Motorworks offers it but requires an engine swap.
June 5, 2015 at 8:56 am #264779I believe the Bosch D Jetronic system was factory installed on type 3 (the Squareback) and 4 (the 411/412) VWs. But if you can find all the parts, it should be adaptable to the Type 1 engine.
There’s a pretty lengthy fuel injection discussion on the Samba:

And here is Jake Raby’s take on fuel injection for VW engines:

My own non-expert opinion, the complexity outweighs the benefit.

June 5, 2015 at 11:25 am #264780Still messing with Bridget’s efi even tho it’s plug n play. Doing a Type 1 would give me the howling fantods.
June 5, 2015 at 11:37 am #264781I thought Ed was making up words again. Turns out he’s not!

June 5, 2015 at 11:40 am #264782Gotta admit: I had to look it up also. Glad we weren’t playing Scrabble.
June 5, 2015 at 1:26 pm #264783Well I have a type 3 Squareback and you would probably have to run a complete t3 motor, or at least get all the t3 cooling system. The way the intake manifolds run would interfere with the doghouse shroud I think. Plenty of options though including mega-squirt ECU and various throttle bodies. Lots to read up on and I hope to convert mine to FI one of these days.
June 5, 2015 at 10:43 pm #264784If you do it post the progress. I have bought most of the parts required to do a conversion including a fuel injected engine from a 1975 beetle but my car is running so good I don’t want to monkey with it! At least it was until today. (See other post)
