It’s pretty cool you found the original builder and that he still had pieces of the car from so long ago. He cared for the car.Bill Ascheman

"Drive Happy"May 28, 2013 at 7:33 am #256087Yeah right? The guy was–still is–a craftsman. I kind of wonder if Mark didn’t help on the car and if that helped tip off the family.
His mom told us she was suspicious for a long time. Took her years to work up the courage to ask him. She educated herself about gays while waiting for the right day. She says, “all I knew about was the leather and feathers.” And AIDS, of course. The boy patterned himself after Hermey from the Rudolph Christmas special. He even has a similar voice. And you might remember the panic back then over getting AIDS from your dentist.
So June was beside herself for a long time, fretting about it all. Finally she asked him and Mark told her what was what. Far from leather and feathers, he was singing in the Baltimore Gay Men’s Chorus and square dancing. She was so relieved she joined PFLAG and set out to spread the word: Gays are just like us! She still says it like a revelation.
I’m old enough to remember those days, and I guess it still is a revelation in some precincts. Statistically, given his parents’ education, the county they live in and the rest (they changed churches when it became clear that Mark was no longer welcome), I guess Mark stood a better than even shot of being thrown out of the house–or sent to some kind of Christian retraining center. That sort of thing still happens, so June’s evangelism is something I respect and admire. Hell, it’s something I marvel at. What heart!
