While I’m taking a lunch break and still have two shoulders to work with, I’m feverishly working the assembly of Moneypenny. For those who don’t know, I believe I have one of the few Fiberfab/CMC combination kits. Not sure about the other VW based kits but it appears the Gas Tank Liner in my kit is CMC. Fiberfab appears to fit a late or early gas tank but CMC liner will not fit an early gas tank without slight modification. Where the fuel tube comes out of the bottom of the tank, the liner bulges downward and contacts the Fiberfab body tub not letting it sit all the way down into the body tub. So I am having to modify the liner to get it to fit the body tub. I have made the fiberglass modification and I’m waiting for it to cure up. While that is curing, on to remaking the hole in my dash for my voltage gauge. I have installed the plug and now comes the slow and very careful drilling of the hole. I’ll let you know how everything turns out. 🙂

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackOctober 18, 2016 at 5:35 pm #302145As stated above, here’s what unfolded. Tank liner modified and fits very well. Then I added a 3/4 inch wood shim stock under the front end to assure the clearance. Looks really nice. However, while using flashlight to inspect inside of tank I noticed serious rust right behind the fuel pickup. I pulled the tank and checked with a pin punch. Punch went right through. I could go through the cleaning and repair process but I decided not to chance it. I’ll order a new 63 – 67 year VW tank. Cutting the fuel filler neck and re-welding is no problem. The dash hole re-drill worked out perfect. Voltage gauge is in and secure.
Tried to do a final adjustment on passenger door and could not get it right. Bottom hinge is real sloppy so I’ll replace those two hinges as well.
All in all a pretty successful work day if you discount needing new parts.

October 20, 2016 at 5:47 pm #302163Well guess what showed up today. My new gas tank AND the new hinges from MG Magic. I checked out the hinges and the hinge pins are nice and tight. Infection of the new tank leads me to believe the tank will fit without cutting the filler neck. I’ll have to check it out after supper. Also in comparing the two tanks, the new one looks slightly different. More to follow. 🙂
