    A word on the wire.

    I know nobody asked me, but while we’re on the subject, I’ve always wondered how the headlight wires
    are supposed to be routed. TDs often show no wiring at all–and Bridget
    doesn’t either.

    Looking from under the fender you can see the wiring come up from the front bay to the spot where the bracket attaches. That is, headlight wiring goes from the switch (or relay), out under the fender, through the bracket and then up into the headlight. The TD brackets have a hole under them just outside of the boss where the headlight itself bolts in.

    Now, I’ve seen a lot of nicely restored TDs with a little loop of wire going from under the headlight mounting post and into that hole. Like this:

    Nothing wrong with it, I guess. But then how are so many other TDs (and Bridget) operating without that loop?

    I think it’s done by way of a hole drilled in the headlight mounting post. The hole under the bracket is just so you can fish the wire through that and into the hollow bracket.

    Makes it that much cleaner looking at the expense of more finger-cramp-inducing work.

    Bridget’s (BCW) bracket appears to differ from a TD bracket in that the wires are in a groove underneath:

    Pretty slick, eh? I never noticed them, and you can barely even feel them if you grab the bracket.

    So in a lot of replicas, the wire is all out, and it travels from the bottom of the post into the cowl. Basically, the wires go the opposite direction as do the wires on a TD.

    So here’s my theory, which is mine:

    If someone were assembling a Fiberfab or other replica with the solid headlight brackets, and that person wanted the most accurate representation of a TD setup, the way to go is to route the wires outside and under the fender, then bring them in under the bracket and up through the pipe into the headlight as usual.

    I’d maybe grind a shallow groove into the bracket underneath and use a strip of aluminum tape to adhere the wire to the bracket. It should be just about invisible and that tape is made to stick to mufflers, so it should hang on there for quite some time.

    Not telling anyone what to do, mind ya. As most of you know by now, I bought Bridget all done and, if I’d had to put her together starting in 1982 she’d still probably be about half finished.

    Wish you had told me that in 1982!

    Classic Roadsters Duchess uses reproduction TD brackets, but runs the wires out of the side panel into the bottom of the headlight shell (similar to the beige/brown TD in the second picture).

    I can’t see the breaks on either of those brackets. Certainly fixable, I’d bet. I suspect they’re a good buy for anyone who wants to get a good TD headlight bracket set.

     Both brackets have same broken area. They are missing part that attaches to radiator support. Ii is a round piece other one is shown in picture. There should be 2 round pieces to attach to radiator support in sandwich style.

    George nailed it.

    And I think the brackets are cast out of cheap “pot metal”.
    “Fixing” would likely be a difficult job!

    I broke when in the same place when I was building my Duchess. Classic Roadsters replaced the bracket. But I recall the rep confirming the broken part was not repairable.

     Marine epoxy could work. Would have to have the part or a replacement Thinking washer and be mounted to fender and radiator while using epoxy. Then remove and finish, and re install.

     

    There is also a low temperature soldering rod good for aluminum, pot metal and other aloys. I forget the name of it got last rods at a swap meet. Guy selling rods punched holes in aluminum soda cans and then repaired holes. He alsorepaired cracked motorcycle side covers and some pot metal parts. Pretty good stuff can use a regular propane torch to use.

    George, the stuff you are thinking of is Alumi-Pro.  (I think)  I bought some a few years ago after seeing the demo.  Never used it.  I like the JB weld idea better though.

    Speaking of welding aluminum, I saw the chief bodyman from Ferrari weld together two pieces of aluminum foil.  This was at the Illinois state fair many years ago.  I still haven’t seen anything like that since.  Wonder if he could weld fiberglas?
