A “MGTD Grand Duchess Roadster Replica” for sale on ebay. Start price $20k. Buy it now: $35K. “Calofornia Dreaming”! I wish they were worth his asking price.

March 8, 2013 at 11:58 am #254919Hard to say for certain about the wire wheels due to photo quality. Either the photo is out of focus or it’s my tired old eyes. But they do look like wire hub caps that normally come with the kit. I just don’t see what he’s asking but worth is decided upon the buyer. Hope he gets a good price for it.

The price is funny to us, but if you look at the world of replicas–where Cobras regularly go for that kind of coin, Healeys top $20k, ancient Ford-based XKs are in the mid teens and even older pan-based Speedster builds command $15k–it makes me wonder: why are our cars typically the cheapest out there, by an order of magnitude?
edsnova2013-03-08 12:04:24March 8, 2013 at 12:23 pm #254921crazy..yea just wire hub caps.
….one could buy a total restored TD for that price!
March 8, 2013 at 12:34 pm #254922Ed, I wonder about that also. Maybe it’s because we TDers are just nice guys who like to see our vehicles get into the right hands? I really do care who buys my cars. Really!
Segue: Once, about 10 yrs ago, I was pressured into selling a vehicle of mine (TR6) to a family member who had become enraptured with it. I tried my best to convince him that it would not be a good vehicle for him because frankly, he had no mechanical skills, was not really interested in acquiring them and was not wealthy enough to have a garage do whatever work would be required. He bought it. I was right….wish I had been wrong.I guess if OPEC can fix the price of oil, TDers should be able to fix the price of our autos. Of course we could not tolerate scabs (or whatever the appropriate word is).I think that the real wire wheels are bolt-ons. Maybe I should list my Daytona MiGi. I’ll start the bidding with real English 72 spoke chrome wire knock offs and a Snoopy hat at $35,000.March 8, 2013 at 12:53 pm #254923Roy, please don’t do that and “drive the price up” until I get my hands on mine…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...March 8, 2013 at 3:07 pm #254924I refuse to be party to this blatent attempt to fix prices and monopolize the market.

March 8, 2013 at 3:59 pm #254925Roy: pretty sure the “wire wheels” in the car in that ad are of the snap-on variety.
To your other points, yes. That’s exactly where I am going with this. I envision a TD Replica Goon Squad monitoring the TD Replica market for “scabs” and then dropping by any “scabs” homes for a “friendly chat.”
That is exactly how I see things going down. Thinking we could even make the Goon Squad something of an elite corps within our club, perhaps identifiable by way of a subtle “GS” badge on our cars’ gas tank….
Paul: you know I’m totally kidding.
Everyone else: no, I’m not 🙂 If anyone asks, the “GS” stands for “Girl Scout.”
March 8, 2013 at 4:02 pm #254926I think the price is worth what ever the buyer is willing to pay.Thats my opinion though.
March 8, 2013 at 7:39 pm #254927If the starting bid on that car is $20,000 and he gets anything close to that, then mine is worth a minimum of $15,000 with totally rebuilt engine (from the case up), plus new fuel pump, coil, carb, new tires, brakes, top, radio etc.,etc., plus other stuff I forgot.
I still don’t know why the Speedsters get 3-4 X as much for their cars as we do – the mechanicals are almost the same, the bodywork is much simpler – it’s worth more just ’cause it says “Porsche” on it? Even Gazelles and other would-be replica mockups command more than the TD’s do.
If anyone wants to double their asking prices and drive the value up, that’s OK with me. Our cars are closer to the originals than any other replica with all the research and work put into making them so. Crap, even some dune buggies go for more than out cars and that’s ridiculous. -
