I just bought a 52 MG TDr VW. It’s an older Fiberfab kit. The brakes are almost gone. Bleeding gets mostly air, but resevoir is near full. So I’m looking at replacing master cylinder. However I can not see how to get access between fire wall and cylinder mount under the hood. The frame is welded. Removing body panels looks too difficult. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

July 15, 2016 at 12:46 pm #291745On my old VW FF TDr, you need to remove the gas tank to get access to the back side of the master cylinder. There should be either clamps or straps (or both, depending on builder) holding the fuel tank down…

Slide the master cylinder off the bolts so you don’t lose the spacer between the two front pan pieces. Its a double firewall there where the master cylinder mounts.

When you disconnect the fuel line, have a couple of 5 gallon gas can ready and when the fuel line comes off at the tunnel tube, stick the fuel line in the gas can. Saves gas that way. And you may want to consider mounting a fuel shutoff valve just ahead of the tunnel fuel tube. That’ll eliminate that problem if you ever have to pull the tank again.

Also means that you can place a fuel filter right after the shutoff and that will make replacing the filter easier.
I can’t count the number of times I said “well I’ll never have to do that again”.
Also, it might be possible to access the master cylinder by taking out the battery and battery box. Headstanding will be required, however.July 17, 2016 at 9:39 am #294122I’m guessing i won’t be the only one benefiting from these good suggestions. Thanks again, guys.
