Funny…people tell you to stay away from the “chain stores” if you need something special. Well…
This past summer, a backfire blew out the muffler on my 1965 Plymouth Satellite.
ALL my classic Mopar friends said I needed a custom shop. But I knew of none near me.
I found the period correct replacement muffler on eBay. When it arrived, I headed to the local Midas shop. I called ahead to make sure they had no problem just handling installation.
The existing muffler had been welded in. So the mechanic was going to have to custom bend about two feet of pipe on either side of the muffler.
Literally “up in the attic”, this Midas had a card file, with the original, hand typed specification cards for just about every vehicle produced before computers started handling the record keeping. The spec cards specifyied exactly how the pipes were to be bent, the order in which to make the bends, measurements, degrees, etc. Very cool!
The mechanic (not surprisingly they gave the car to the eldest guy in the shop) told me about two months prior, the owner tried to throw out all those old files. The mechanic stopped him!
So don’t discount shops like Midas, Monroe etc. when you need work done on a classic!
