    @newkitman

     I have an IRS Transaxle WITHOUT the sleeve for the throwout bearing. The transaxle is from an unknown vehicle. My questions are: (1) do all IRS transaxles take the same throwout bearing and if not (2) what one should I use?

    Allen, you are right to be careful here. I don’t know the answer to your question, but the clutch disc was changed about 1970. I had bought a 1969 clutch disc for my 1969 engine. Wrong. —  I have a 1971 (or later) transmission.

    I think if you don’t have the sleeve (this part?) then you have an early style rig. You’ll want an early style pressure plate or, if you get a later one, also get this collar that goes over the “fingers.”

    Most of the VW replacement clutch kits come with the collar assembly. You just remove it if you’ve got the later style box. If you don’t, of course, the engine won’t slide on the transmission. Don’t ask me how I know!

    Ditto Ed’s input. The pressure plate and throwout bearing must match. The sleeve is required for the later style pressure plate, and is not required for the older style with three fingers and a collar.KentT2016-03-17 22:15:01

    Go with what Ed said.  I just remember that I was surprised when things did not slip together like I had planned (hoped).

    Thanks for all the responses. Fortunately I have two new pressure plates and one is the old style that I need. Just purchased the correct throwout bearing. Now if the weather will cooperate I’ll get the engine in this weekend. I had it in, sort of but it didn’t fit like I believed it should so pulled it yesterday to figure it all out. Have a great weekend all. After church Sunday I’m off to the Silver Dollar Showdown, a VW show, swap meet and drag race about 15 miles from here. Thumbs Up

    Well I finally figured it out. (Note to self (and anyone else.)) My chassis is a 71 chassis so I ordered parts for the transaxle figuring it was a 71. NOT!!  It’s a 69 IRS with the older configuration. This means I have to get a throw out bearing shaft, a throw out bearing, pressure plate and a clutch operating shaft repair kit al for a 69 transaxle. Self and anyone else…..they ALL have to match!! Been repairing VWs since 74. Should have remembered that. Dang I hate getting old. Fortunately I have the correct pressure plate and changed that today.

    Allen, you seem to have my problem in reverse.  I have a 69 vehicle, 69 engine with a 71 transaxle.  …see I told you to be careful.  Smile

    Be Careful?…Nah. When I’m careful I ALWAYS get hurt. Ouch But I’ll file this in lessons learned and press on.
