I know our TDs come Jelcoated a certain color but have seen photos of some TDs with what appears to be black wheel wells. So the question begs me to ask “what color do most of you paint the underside of the fenders and wheel wells?”
Not there yet with my TD but need to know if I have to budget for black paint.
Thanks

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 22, 2011 at 1:46 pm #245460I used black undercoating on the bottom side of the fenders, to give a small layer of protection against chipping from debris thrown up by the tires. Classic Roadsters recommended this.
On any body panels under the fender line that should not be body color, I used matte black grill paint. For example, VW based TD replicas have flat areas that extend from the “true” body side panels to cover the VW pan.
And yes, I used hi-temp bar-b-que grill paint. Normal flat black paint was too flat. The matte finish of the grill paint was perfect. Makes the extraneous panels “disappear.”
It’s hard to see, but look at the first photo of my Duchess in my photo gallery (PMOSSBERG). You can barely make out the black painted panels, but you can see that the front body panels (red) continue below the fender.
I’ve seen TD replicas where everything under the fender is black. Take a look at an original TD and you will see that is not correct.

July 22, 2011 at 1:57 pm #245461Allen, On the original MG, the underside of the fenders is the same color as the top side of the fender. Most replicas are black under the fenders. Some builders use some type of undercoating.Paul used a black paint, not flat, not glossy, but he said that it made the VW chassis parts seem to disappear. Perhaps he will reply and share this with us again.
A guy I met at a cruise in [who ran a body shop] painted his underfenders the same color as the car . He did a lot of preperation, but the end result was spectacular.

July 22, 2011 at 4:15 pm #245463Paul, Two great minds at work! I’m just the slower of the two. I type slower as well.
July 22, 2011 at 4:32 pm #245464Thanks for the info guys. Paul, did you use a rattle can type of undercoat or did you use a spray gun and paint booth to apply the undercoat?
I looked at the photo of your Duchess and saw that the underside of the front and rear fenders are black but wasn’t sure if it was painted black or the dark was a shadow. Thanks for the input. You can really get a good look if you look in the manufacturer differences photos. Those are larger and stand out better. The TD look awesome closer up.

Except for an electric drill, I built my Duchess with hand tools…including the rattle can undercoat and black paint.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 25, 2011 at 12:27 am #245467I ordered a product of the internet used to coat the inside of pick truck beds,
its called “Grizzly Grip” . I liked it because you can brush or roller it it on
and as it dries in expands a little bit and creates a texture that covers the
brush and rollers marks. I ended up coating all the front trunk area and
passenger area after bolting down the body to the floorpan in order to
completely seal of these areas from water penetration and so far no
problems!!
July 25, 2011 at 5:43 pm #245468Duplicolor makes a truck bed coating in both rattle can and roll on. I have used both. The rattle can has almost a smooth texture but the roll on comes with a roller that leaves a rough surface. It’s basically paint with urethane solids mixed in. Gives a little rubbery protective barrier that can aid in repelling rocks or gravel impacts. I’ve used it on my VW beetle fender wells for years.
July 26, 2011 at 11:30 am #245469IMHO Grizzly Grip tastes better than the Dupli-color
