My heater boxes have a about 1 inch nipple from the top near where the exhaust inlets are. A po has put a heater hose from one to the other effectively blocking them.

I know where those hoses go, but there are two smaller ones coming from the top of the heater boxes. Oh, about 1 inch in diameter?

certainly I’m not saying it isn’t to small though! But I’ve learned a few expensive lessons trying to outdo VW’s engineers!

VW installed it on all 1975 and newer fuel injected bugs so it’s gotta be good! right?

Mine handles real good now, removed all the small torsion bars and set the front tire pressure to 14 lbs.
The 30 pict/3 was the standard carb on 1600 sp vw’s in Canada and the US for 1970. In 1971 they went to the 34mm carb and doghouse cooling shroud.

Here is one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Bug-Beetle-Ghia-Oil-Cooler-Tin-aka-Hoover-Bit-/290874358802?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item43b9767c12
I think it would be easy to fab something up yourself though. I honestly question just how severe that air leak really is.

Did you ever get the ebrake repositioned Happyjack? That was the first thing I did to mine when I got it last fall!

I think my car running hot has been a contributing factor into why it has only gone 11000 miles in the past 35 years! That and the fact you could hardly hold it on the road if there was any wind or you met someone the way it was setup! Thanks to THIS forum I got that sorted out and I’m closing in on the overheating problem so the future with it…[Read more]

I feel your pain! First of all, I’d like to know why some of us have trouble overheating and others don’t? I just purchased my replica last fall and got it on the road this spring, I have fought with excess temperatures ever since! If I keep under 50 mph it is ok. Mine is a 1970 dual relief engine with single port and a 30 pict/3 carb. I have…[Read more]

The short was between the D+ wire and the F wire at the generator. ( I had the wires off to install a new style oil cooler and they got shorted together, Now my signal lights do some strange things!!

And that’s the color I wanted too, but I settled for a black one! I like that wiring harness too, mine is all done in black and white with labels! a real bear to trace and repair! I had a short somewhere yesterday and fried the ground wire in the main harness.

Yes, thermostat full up is vanes open, should be maximum cooling. I have been a mechanic for over 40 years and I’ve learnt more this past couple of months than I ever thought possible! but I still can’t get this darn VW to cool down! I know vmy engine isn’t in new condition but it has good compression and is clean with no oil leaks. It wouldn’t…[Read more]

How did you run the galvalume firewall on yours mrimd? I can’t seem to get mine cool enough to suit me! I live 16 miles from town and after that distance my oil temp is over 210 and my oil light is winking at me at idle! I KNOW if I can get that temp down 10 to 15 degrees the oil pressure will correct itself. I just tonight cut the holes in my…[Read more]

I have came to the same conclusion that edsnova has, that my temp guage is lying to me! It got all the proper thermostat parts including a working thermostat and installed them today. Car is running beautiful! All the cold engine stumbling is gone, engine warms up quicker fuel mileage even seems better! Guage still at 220+ after a 20 minute ru…[Read more]

when I checked it with the infrared heat gun at work they were close. resolution on guage in the care is poor no markings between 210 and 250! you have to guess. is the bottom of the pressure regulator a good indication of true oil temp?

Oh! The wasserboxer has hydraulic lifters too! It would be nice to get away from adjusting lifters! AND make a quieter engine!

I removed the regulator and spring, all appears normal there. I have a dual pressure control engine so mine does have the valve at the flywheel end too. I’m wondering if I’m worrying over something that really isn’t a problem though. my engine doesn’t seem hot even though the gauge says it is, I just drove it home from town and the gauge is…[Read more]

All of the temperature control items have been removed from my engine. thermostat and all linkage and vanes. Would it be worthwhile to locate these parts and reinstall them? I KNOW they should be there, but would that be the cause of the overheating?

I have checked all the items so far posted and they are all good. I just tried a vacuum dist, I like the way it runs but still have 220 oil after 20 minute run at 60 mph. The oil temp sender is in the plug on the bottom of the engine under the oil pressure regulator. Have any of you used the ” adrian” pressure regulator with the ball? It does…[Read more]
