I’ll only be shortening an 8 inch, 16AWG wire by about half so I don’t think its enough to be concerned about.

Measured the resistance of the float mechanism from empty through full. Runs from 4 ohms at empty to 12 ohms at full. Then removed the float mechanism from the mount bracket and cut the bracket to size after measuring the depth from top of float mechanism flange on tank to bottom of tank. Then installed the float mechanism and rechecked the ohms…[Read more]

Thanks for the help guys. I’m going to stick with the float from the kit. That should work best with the gauge from the kit. I’ll cut the channel and make sure the float arm travels as is should. I’ll keep you posted on the results.

While letting the stain on the dash dry, I decided to install the float in my new gas tank. Trying to follow the instructions with my kit to set the fuel tank float. The rod is set to the correct length as per the instructions. However, the main unit that fits down into the tank doesn’t fit at all. Its waaaaay to long. Think of a metal channel…[Read more]

I ended up using a hand drill with the hole cutter. Drill has a level and an attachment for securing the drill and keeping level against what you are drilling. Came out very well so far. Cluster cut, drilled and sanded clean. On to the main dash. Pictures probably Monday. Family duties today.

I said lacquer because I couldn’t remember the name of the product. I got it at the boat repair shop. I’ll have to get the name of it later. Right now I have my household chores and then back to the dash work. I will start with the instrument cluster and may end up just staining and sealing it. Using the vinyl will mean adding trim and the trim…[Read more]

Okay. New wood purchased for dash. Got the wood at Warner Robins Supply. So a quick question/poll. Before installing gauges…sand, stain and polish dash face or sand and cover with black vinyl? How difficult would applying vinyl be? Quick note…I’m not very good with curved surfaces.
One other question. Anyone know the diameter of stock VW Bug speedo?

I though of driving out the pins and re-inserting them the correct way but decided against it. The hinges were loose at the pins and the new ones are nice and tight.

As stated in an earlier post, I received that dash hinges from MG Magic. However, I checked them out with the old hinges and noticed a discrepancy. Your advice please. The hinges, when facing aft have the head of the hinge pin facing DOWN. When comparing the new hinges with the left door hinges they match (as in hinge pin head facing up.)…[Read more]

Well I plugged the hole in the dash for the voltmeter. I let the plug dry for 48 hours and then its time to drill to fit the voltmeter. Voltmeter is 1/16 inch smaller than planned hole which is no problem as the bezel will cover the slightly larger hole. So I start drilling the dash. Sharp hole saw and medium speed on the drill. So far; so good.…[Read more]

Jack. I followed your steps for the search engine and it worked very well.
I have the vent tube that ran from the trunk to the canister in the engine compartment from my old Ghia rebuild. Going to run the fuel vent hose to a section of that tubing. Probably will run the tube down through the front and then under the body (clamped to the body…[Read more]

Same here in the south. While driving with the top down its okay. But in traffic stopped at a traffic light, with the top down you really cook. That’s why a lot of folks locally drive their convertibles with the top up and windows down. Whats bad is the top down with the windows up. 😮

Well guess what showed up today. My new gas tank AND the new hinges from MG Magic. I checked out the hinges and the hinge pins are nice and tight. Infection of the new tank leads me to believe the tank will fit without cutting the filler neck. I’ll have to check it out after supper. Also in comparing the two tanks, the new one looks slightly…[Read more]

I couldn’t figure out the search function so here goes. What is the routing of the fuel tank vent hose? I know it was mentioned recently but can’t find the search function. Thanks.
