I know this may be tricky to answer, but any guidance would
be appreciated. I?ve got a lead on an unfinished Dutchess
and am looking for your feedback. The ’70 VW chassis with
rebuilt 1600cc engine is, according to the owner, ready to
accept the body. The body looks clean, but there are no
instruments, no interior, door hinges, hood latches, or
top. I suspect there are a number of items I’m going to
have to chase down. Before I drive all the way out to see
it, does $2200 sound reasonable?
April 20, 2010 at 4:33 pm #241136Here goes my ”humble opinion” again. The Duchess is a very desirable TD replica ,good quality and accurate reproduction. If everything is as the seller says it is ,it could still cost an additional$2000 to finish it. If you can do most of the work yourself and if it’s something you would enjoy doing, you would probably be ok.at that price Keep us informed as to your progress. You will no doubt get more opinions ,just consider them all when making your decision.
April 20, 2010 at 5:04 pm #241137my 2 cents;with rebuilt engines going for 1600 and up and the frame is ready to go,sounds like a fare price.
April 20, 2010 at 5:49 pm #241138Agreed it’s a good price.
Why not give MG Magic in Florida a call. They have lot of parts for the replicas and are very helpful. They can give you a good idea of what’s out there and what the price will be. If you have to get the parts from Moss it’ll cost ya. Some parts may have to be scrounged since they seem to be getting more rare.
Larry’s estimate sounds pretty good, but I usually end up at twice the budget on any project. Even at twice the estimate, you still have her for about $6K, which is a pretty good price for a nice Duchess.
My 2 cents; go with your gut and don’t look back!
P.S. Sorry I didn’t look up MG magics’s number, but you can search this site. I’m late for a drive!
April 20, 2010 at 8:56 pm #241139Rick,
I agree $2,200 is not bad if you want to buy a body and a rebuilt engine. (Although I would want to know rebuilt by who?!)
But that is not your goal. You seem intent on completing a nice MG TD reproduction.
Given that nice, running TD replicas can be had for $5,000 and often less, I think $2,200 is high and you should offer less.
I agree, it is likely a good deal. But I would still bid low.
Here are some (OK, many) thoughts on what you will be facing to complete the car. My background? I own a Classic Roadsters VW-based Duchess, which I built myself.
There is a chance MG Magic will be able to help with parts. But I believe most of what they have are for Migis and Fiberfabs. I’m willing to bet they will not have the interior, top or curtains to fit a Duchess. And no…they are not necessarily interchangeable between kits.
I suspect you are going to have to have seats built and an interior sewn from scratch, as well as a
roof and side curtains. I have no recent experience on which to base an estimate. But guess that will not be cheap. Are the electric harnesses there? Classic Roadsters provided excellent front, rear, dash and main harnesses with their kits. If they are not there, you will be wiring from scratch. There are companies providing generic wiring harnesses, so you will have somewhere to start.
Gauges are pretty straight forward.
Hood hinges and latches are best sourced from a boat supplier. That will be inexpensive.
The bits to hold the roof supports together will also come from your boat supplier.
Mg Magic should be able to provide door handles, door latches and door hinges. Classic Roadsters used reproduction TD parts. So if MG Magic cannot help, Moss Motors has them.
Is the VW steering column there?
If the Classic Roadsters gas tank there? CR did NOT use the VW gas tank. There is no easy way to mount a VW tank in a Duchess. They provided a ten gallon tank which mounts on the right front floor pan, along with a filler tube that runs up and to the radiator cap.
If that body is assembled and off the chassis, I would want to know how it was assembled. If the car was purchased as a kit, the body is assembled piece by piece, on to the chassis. It is NOT assembled separately, then mounted as a complete unit. This ensured everything was aligned to the pan. Knowing how the kit got to its present state will be important.
There are lots of bits and pieces necessary to finish an unbuilt kit. Again (see a pattern?) it would be nice to know how much of the original kit’s bits and pieces are in the seller’s possession.
Bottom line…take the drive to see what the seller actually has. Take lots (LOTS) of pictures and put ’em up on flickr or some other site for us to see them all!
The more you and we know, the better the advice we can give.

April 20, 2010 at 9:37 pm #241141I’ll ditto Paul. If building a car is your bliss, then by all means go for it. But realize that a half-finished kit will require a special kind of buyer. He won’t likely sell it too fast and won’t see bids above asking. For the money you’d be looking at here (say about $5,000 all said and done) I’d be trying to find a finished car. The Chevette BCW down in Jacksonville listed on ebay hasn’t seen any bids yet at $5500. If it doesn’t sell, my guess is it’ll get relisted in a week for $500 off.
My car spent months on Craigslist before I grabbed it for $1k less than its original listing.
If you start out with an all-done car, you can always take it apart and put it back together yourself while complaining on this forum about the P.O. Several of our members appear to have taken that route, and they’re having a ball. The best thing about it? you KNOW you had all the parts to begin with.
April 20, 2010 at 10:05 pm #241142I know I have all my parts!
I mean in my Duchess.
What did ya’ll think I meant?

April 20, 2010 at 10:07 pm #241143Rick,
I hope I didn’t scare you off.
On the other hand, I know a guy who has resurrected probably 20 kit cars.
I just you to go into this with your eyes open.
So…go see it and get us pictures. I agree with Ed. A partially built kit is not going to sell fast. You have time to work through the pros and cons.

April 21, 2010 at 8:42 pm #241144Guys,
This is just the kind of feedback I came here for. I’m
just finishing up a two-year restoration of a 1968 Harley
Sportster and the memory of large and growing project is
fresh. My gut tells me that this TD might be more than
I’m willing to take on while still working full time. The
idea of working with a running car makes good sense. I do
plan to meet with the guy because I’m sure to learn a
lot, and will share pics with the group.
Rick
April 21, 2010 at 10:43 pm #241145Good luck Rick!
I’d like to see pics of that Harley too!

April 27, 2010 at 4:04 pm #241146I got my first ride in a TD replica and I?m hooked. I
answered an ad for a BRG Dutchess body and 1970 chassis,
1974 motor. Turns out he was also interested in selling
his red Fiberfab on a 1966 chassis, 1600cc motor.
So both the wife and I got rides in the red car. For me,
I found the 1600 a little down on power, even though we
didn?t go over 45mph — but I like a bit of pick up when
I drive a sports car. He wants $5500 for the red one, but
it doesn?t have a top, and he didn?t hook up the heater.
I live on the Northern California coast so those are BIG
considerations.
The chassis that goes with the Dutchess was purchased
from a friend of his and it?s much nicer that what?s on
the Fiberfab. Not only is it IRS, but the supports at the
front and rear of the car are much more substantial. He
wants $2500 for the Dutchess, and is including a new top
and a couple of boxes worth of parts.
To me, it looks like a big project, but then I?m slow —
and I work full time. He’s a first class handyman and
built the red one in only 6 months and said it was in
worse shape than the green one.

April 27, 2010 at 4:14 pm #241147I got a ride in the red car (Fiberfab) and I decided I like TD kit cars. The green car is a Duchess and I preferred the chassis. I’m now trying to get a handle on just how much work the green car would be to put together — and how many parts need to be sourced. I took a whole bunch of pictures of that chassis and would like to get some feedback on whether it’s as good as I think it is. I’m not sure however if posting that many pictures (a dozen or so) would be appropriate for this site. .

April 27, 2010 at 8:49 pm #241148Rick, you post pictures by clicking the button with the picture of a tree on it and an upward-pointing arrow–last button on the top right above the “post reply” window.
Took me two or three tries too.
Just post reply, hit that button, click “browse” on the box that pops up and navigate your your photo.
It’s a good idea to resize them before you start to something like 400 by 300. The machine won’t let you post them if they’re over a certain size.
Good luck. We look forward to seeing this project.
April 27, 2010 at 9:04 pm #241149Rick,
If you are considering the Duchess, contact via the private messenger. I can provide copies of what should be in those boxes.
And if you buy it, and there is no assembly manual, I can copy mine for you.

April 27, 2010 at 11:48 pm #241150Thanks Ed, I’ll re-size the photos and re-post shortly.
Overall I was a little more impressed with the Dutchess components than the Fiberfab, that may be mostly because the chassis was beefier and the exhaust note was
much richer (deeper and more sports car like). I’m thinking $2500 is a bit high for something that I would have to do that much work on, and as Paul surmised earlier, I’m more inclined to
go with a completed car. I have lots of ideas on how I’d fix one up:
TD-size steering wheel, luggage rack with attached suitcase, and maybe even fabricate a removable hard top
out of fiberglass. Has anyone done the latter?Rick
April 28, 2010 at 12:47 am #241151Paul,
I like the Leprechaun, but isn’t cross country shipping a bit pricey? (I remember seeing a quote for something like $1500.) Also, I’m thinking I want to limit my search to somewhere within a 5 or 6 hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area so that I could check it out. And drive it home.
RickPMOSSBERG wrote:Rick,PS: Take a look at the leprechan, posted here for sale today.
$4,200.
April 28, 2010 at 10:05 am #241152About ten years ago, I had a ’65 Plymouth shipped from California to NJ. It cost about $1,200 for transport on an open car carrier. Closed transport was far more expensive.
So $1,500 now is probably on target.
Of course you could always drive it home. 🙂

April 28, 2010 at 10:24 am #241153Rick, There is one in Medford Or. It’s on e-bay item# 170477797204, The current bid is at $2500 , buy it now $4200. It looks like a Fiber Fab ,same family for 25 years. The ad doesn’t say, but it doesn’t look like it’s IRS looking at the angle of the rear wheels.According to Mapquest ,it’s about six hours from you. I’m just passing the info,I have no connection with the seller.
April 28, 2010 at 12:34 pm #241154That’s on a 1961 chassis. Swing axle. 1200 cc motor too. Two people have asked about driving it out of state and the owner is suggesting no.
April 28, 2010 at 1:28 pm #241155Thanks Ed and Larry — I was one of the guys asking! I was
curious WHY he wouldn’t drive it: whether because of the
car’s condition or because 6 hours on coast in a drafty
sports car wasn’t something he’d do. At any rate, I think I
want more power (like 2 liters!) and IRS.

April 28, 2010 at 1:59 pm #241156Even in cars that only weigh about 1800 to 1900 pounds, you don’t want a 1200.
The other downside to the early VWs is the rear swing axles that you mentioned. You want a later chassis with the independent rear suspension.

May 16, 2010 at 6:43 pm #241157Rick,
You can post more pics.
Or start a flickr account (or similar web-based photo storage site) and link to the picture you store there.
So far, it’s more important what we do not see. That is…are the rest of the parts there?
From what we do see, I don’t like how high the Duchess is riding in the rear. That’s a huge amount of space between rear tires and fenders.
Is the car on jack stands? I don’t see ’em but figured I’d ask.
It’s possible the rear sub-frame is not mounted level to the floor. that would raise the entire rear of the car.
