    Hello All

    Just noticed a crask in my windshield. I still have 11 months on my last inspection (PA), so Its no emergency, but I am sure it wont pass next time. Any reason why I could not just go to a glass shop, and have them cut a new windshield, and put it in the frame? The windshield seems to be FLAT, not curved, and the glass does not seem to be auto glass. Is this normal (I have a VW MIGI II)

    From expeirence it has to be what is refered to as front glass. I believe that means its laminated and has a DOT # that identifies its manufactorer. I also think it has to be a minimum of 1/4 thick

    The glass should be DOT stamped safety glass. If not, the manufacturer/builder/previous owner got away with something.

    And you are luck you’ve never had an incident. Laminated windshield glass crumbles into small, dull “balls” of glass. Go through normal plate glass, and you will have serious problems. so even of there is “normal” glass in there now, you want laminated safety glass.

    TD windshields are perfectly flat. The top and sides are straight. The bottom has the slightest curve to it.

    And auto glass place will be able to get DOT stamped safety glass in the proper thickness for your TD.

    The entire windshield, glass and frame will come off your car as a unit. The top and sides of the frame should be one piece. The lower bar of the frame is removable and the glass will simply slide out.

    Any competent windshield shop should be able to cut a windshield to fit.

    I’m on my third windshield. Any good glass shop should be able to cut you a new one. It’s easy to unbolt the frame assembly…take them the whole thing.
