    First thanks all for your great responses! My engine has a tag over the caes id 5540 b 3932338. Any ideas what this tells me and the size of the engine. according to my vin the chassis is a 78 bug.

    Not sure what you mean. What is the “tag” you mention?

    The number in your post doesn’t match any VW case numbers.

    I agree with Ed.

    My best guess is that a rebuilder added their own tag.
