I have been meaning to ask about what all of you burn for gas and use for oil in your VW’s. I was just reading another post that talked about oil which reminded me to make this post. I cant get real Reg gas here every thing is E-10. Will burning E-10 gas hurt my 1966 engine? Should I be adding somthing when I fill up like I do for my boat?
May 4, 2011 at 10:58 am #244462Anything with a carburetor suffers from the E10, which in most cases is E-15 or even more! The ethanol eats up the neoprene needle seats, accelerator pumps, fuel pump diaphragms. In some cases, it also requires the carbs to be re-jetted, slightly richer.
Today’s cars are computer controlled, use Viton as seal material and the ethanol will run OK without destroying stuff.
Sta-Bil makes and additive to help with the use of this horrible fuel. I add it to regular 87 octane fuel. Sta-Bil Ethanol Treatment.

I use AMSOIL Premium Protection (with the ZDDP) 20w-50 year round in my Beetles. I have one with an external oil filter and one without. I change the oil in them every 2,500 and 1,500 miles respectively.
Stock, these engines only hold 85 oz. (2 qts/21 oz) of oil.
The guys with the Chevette and Ford powered cars should be using good oil with a ZDDP package too. These are also flat tappet engines.

May 5, 2011 at 10:01 am #244463Thats what I was wondering. I use the green sta-bill with the ethanol treatment in my boat. Ill start putting it in my toy. Ill talk to some of the race car guys around here about were to get the oil. Thanks
May 18, 2011 at 10:22 am #244464You might check out http://www.classiccarmotoroil.com . I use and like it a lot. It
doesn’t leak out near as bad as Mobil 1 did. Seems to run cool, has a zinc
package, and really hangs on the dip stick, so I don’t think it drains off the
internal parts like some oils do. Expensive, but much less than a new engine.

May 18, 2011 at 12:17 pm #244465Saw an oil in Autozone yesterday. It was a Valvolene “racing” oil. They talked about the high ZDDP content. It was pricey, I think $8.99 per quart, but it is the only oil that I have seen in a regular parts store.
May 18, 2011 at 12:51 pm #244466Dennis,
They have a coupon for that oil on line now – I think like 50.00 off per case.
A 2.00 off per quart of the part syn oil w/ high zinc just went off sale I think
– I got about a case of the stuff for like 2.95 per quart at Auto Zone.
Google it
May 18, 2011 at 6:47 pm #244467The Volks guys at The Samba swear by Brad Penn racing oil. I started using it last summer and my engine temp dropped 10 degrees. I think I will stick with it. High in ZDDP. I found mine at amazon.com. It depends on the vendor, but averages around $5.00 to $6.00 a quart. Heres a link http://www.amazon.com/Brad-Penn-10W30-Partial-Synthetic/dp/B 001HNT9TM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1305757990&sr=8-3 … shop around some to find the best deal. Shipping will be free on orders over $25.00. This is just a suggestion, not to start a which oil is best argument as there are a lot of good oils out there. Just be sure to use a quality oil. At less than 3 quarts an oil change buy your baby some good stuff.

May 18, 2011 at 7:40 pm #244468I searched around and was supprized to also find the Valvoline Racing 20w50 in my local Oreilly’s. Quarts for $4.98 and my brother-in-law works there.
May 23, 2011 at 3:52 pm #244469FYI , Classic car Motor oil is $64.50 per 12 qt. case , INCLUDING shipping.
That equals $5.38 per quart, at your door. It is 15-w40 with 1600 ppm ZDDP
May 24, 2011 at 10:30 am #244470I use AMSOIL Premium Protection. It comes in 10w-40 and 20w-50 viscosities. It had the ZDDP package. I use the 10w-40 for my flat tappet SBC 350 in the ’84 Chevy C-10 that my son drives.
My VW is modified for full flow oiling has a 1 quart remote filter (WIX #51515). So, it takes 117 ounces (3 qts./21 oz.) per change.
Due to the fact I have filtered oil, I change it every 2,500 miles versus the 1,200 miles for a stock air cooled VW.
May 25, 2011 at 10:45 pm #244471I contacted AMSOIL to see about getting some oil. They wanted to know how many miles I would drive a year. I guessed about 1500. They suggested that I get a new oil that they now have. Its called Z Rod. So I ordered a case and it came today. Im going to try to change oil this week. A case should last me a few years.
May 28, 2011 at 6:51 pm #244472I was at my local parts house today checking out the oils and oil additives… STP has the ZDDP in it too. Has anyone had much experience with it. I didn’t even know they still made that stuff. I used it in an old hot rod ’62 Lincoln my dad gave to my brother and I back in ’68. We ran the @#$% out of that thing. I was only 17-18 at the time.
May 28, 2011 at 8:48 pm #244473Montie, I used STP in my 68 Camaro 230 6 cyl.It was still going strong at better than 150,000 when my son’s friend wrecked his 73 Chevelle and we bought the 350 out of it. I haven’t used it recently but am going to look in to it now. It sure makes a screwdriver slip out of your finger and thumb . I remember that was how the parts guys would convince us to buy it back then.
May 28, 2011 at 10:57 pm #244474Parts guys heck!
That screwdriver thing was the standard STP commercial. Andy G would have all sorts of “muscle men” trying to pick up a screwdriver with their thumb and forefinger. I think I remember one with a Sumo wrestler!
