Just purchased my first MGTD Replica. It’s an Allison and I know little to nothing about this car other than it’s very well built and it has a VW drive train. The car is in very good to excellent condition with only some minor rust of the real wire knockoff rims. The glass body is very thick and the gelcoat is pristine. The interior is emaculate. The engine could use a little detail work but other than that the car is probably an 8 on a 10 point scale. I did notice that the front end is a little light and seems to bounce more than other VW’s I have owned or driven and wondered if it was due to being so light up front and the cockpit area being where the back seat normally is in a beetle.
I was wondering if anyone else on this forum had one of these cars as I would like to get some information. The car has what I think are a couple of neat features which include a gas tank that is built into the body and fills through the cap on the feaux radiator grill which is highly polished stainless not chrome. With the gas tank part of the body the entire area under the hood can be used for storage. The battery is in the area behind the seats in it’s own little compartment with easy access as is the electrical panel which is recessed into the firewall up front and covered with an etched smoke colored plexiglas panel. A lot of thought went into the design of this car for sure as are evident in the details. Look forward to getting some feed back. I’ll post some pics soon.
Thanks in advance.

May 31, 2011 at 12:26 pm #244919Car looks great. For front end fixes, do a search here on “adjustable beam.”
May 31, 2011 at 2:18 pm #244920GF,
very nice – love the patina on the seats etc.
I think Richard Woobly ( CTDG ) has one of those and I am sure others.
Wish mine was like that before I bought my basket case – oh well it was
fun doing the resto w/ my son.

May 31, 2011 at 7:22 pm #244921GunFighter, Glad you got the Allison!!!It is a great looking car. You’ll enjoy it for years to come.Hope you realize just how rare it is. Quality all the way.
June 1, 2011 at 9:13 am #244922Thanks guys. Would love to get some details on how the car is built. Like what mods, if any, were done to the stock VW chassis and just how the car was put together. I have a couple of the original brochures but they are for the Nissan powered models. Nothing on the VW powered ones. I’ve searched the internet but don’t come up with much on the Allison Replicar company. If anyone has any info I would love to have it.
Thanks again.

June 1, 2011 at 9:19 am #244923I saw in the Gallery there is a Larry that also has an Allison. Any others out there???
Does anyone know if there are any events, clubs other than this forum or gatherings for MGTD owners anywhere in the country?
June 1, 2011 at 9:52 am #244924Gunfighter you got yourself a beauty there. I know you’re going to ejnoy showing her off while driving around town. In your photos there is a placard in the trunk area of your TD. Is that a standard item with the Allison kit or did you make that? That’s a handy placard to have.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJune 1, 2011 at 10:07 am #244925Tom, Richard Wobby here on the forum also has an Allison .He is active here when time allows.Larry, from Florida has a nice red one but he dosen’t post here very often.
Question, Does the Allison top fold down or do you have to remove it . Looking at Larry’s pictures with the frames arround the quarter windows,I can not see how the top could fold. Also the very neat boot cover looks too small to cover a folded top. I’d love to see some pics of the side curtains and how they attach to the doors .
June 1, 2011 at 11:59 am #244926Hi Larry,
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll PM Richard. Hopefully he has some additional info. Here’s what I know about the car. To my knowledge the Allison Replicar Ltd company manufactured the MGTD with two options. One with a VW drive train and one with a Nissan drive train. I don’t know if the type with the Nissan drive train ever got off the ground but I have 3 of the original brochures along with a spec sheet for the model having the Nissan drive train. Also have one of Ken Allison’s business cards. All in excellent condition. The spec sheet shows the delux model with real wire knock off type rims with a MSRP of $21,900 and the standard model with standard slotted steel rims and MG hubcaps for $19,800. Which was pretty expensive for the early 1980’s. The cars were built on an as ordered basis and required a non refundable deposit of $2,000. They came with a 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty and offered an automatic trans and air conditioning as options on the nissan powered models. The body had a lifetime warranty against stress cracks and the jellcoat is a minimum of 39 mils thick. I’ll see if I can scan the broshure and price list/spec sheet I have and post it.
As far as the top goes the one I got with the car is factory. The 2 bow unit mounts to a bimini type bracket on top of the body rail behind the seat like on a boat and the top is made to fold down or be removed all together. It’s torn so I am gonna have to get a new one made. Hopefully they can match the side curtins which are in like new condition. The side curtins attach similiar to the way the jeep YJ models did. There’s a pin at one end and a U shaped bracket at the other. The pin slips into a hole in the top of the door and the U shaped bracket slips behind a mount on the inside of the door and is securred with a one wing wing nut. I haven’t looked closely but I think the window zipps to open and close. I’ll get some pics for you and post them.
I don’t think the boot is supposed to be used with the top attached as it uses the same snaps as the top does in the back. It’s mainly there for looks when the top is removed so you don’t see any of the snaps. There is a huge amount of detail in this car that I haven’t seen on the other kits. I would love to know how many were made. I’ll try to get some pics up for you.
June 1, 2011 at 12:11 pm #244927Allen,
The plackard I think you are referring to is the electrical components cover. It is stock with the Allison. It’s a smoke colored plexiglas panel with the electrical components labeled on the face and the components tucked away behind it. Just flip the two thumb screws and the cover comes off exposing all the electricals. Great idea that keeps everything nice and neat looking.
June 1, 2011 at 12:14 pm #244928Tom,
If you can get me jpg or PDF files of the brochures and spec sheet, I will get them added to the TD Replica History page

P.S. to All – For some reason, the links to all the pictures are broken when you view the TD Replica History page in Internet Explorer. They work properly in Firefox.
