For reasons that seemed important at the time, I had decided to sell my BCW TD. I had it appraised ($12,750), and put a For Sale sign on it. I took it to a few cruise ins and talked to two consigners. They both thought $8000 to $9000 was a better price range. Then I got a good offer darn close to the appraised value. After a sleepless night, I couldn’t sell it!
So I’m back, still looking for wire wheels (at a good price), and it is going into the upholstery shop,for new carpets and tonneu cover next week.
Hey Dick, I’m glad you decided to keep your BCW. It’s a super nice car and your plans will make it even better. Keep us informed as to the route you take with the wire wheels. It should be much easier than on a VW based car. The smaller diameter lug bolt circle should fit inside the wire wheel center . I think that’s what gave Roy the most trouble.
Dick, Ed is correct that my biggest concern (other than cost) was how to adapt the “new” wheels (actually adapting the adapters) to the VW brake drums. If you want to stay with 14″ tires then the obvious choice is MGB wheels. The outside diameter of my 175/75/14″ is almost exactly what the 165R15’s that were on my car. There are enough MGB owners who are changing from painted wires to chrome that there are painted wires available on eBay and Craigs list frequently. MGB wires would most probably be 60 spokes and 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 wide hubs. They fit nicely and look good under the fenders. (My wires are 72 spoke 5-1/2, 14″ chrome from a Triumph Stag.) If you want to stay with used British wires then Austin Healey, Sunbeam Alpine, Morgan, MGB, or Triumph is a fairly complete list of your choices. You need to be careful to get the correct adapters since new wires do not necessarily use the old splines to mount. If you are going with some of the newer type wire wheels, adapters something like
