This one is driving me crazy. When cruising around 60 to 65 mph for fifteen to twenty minutes, I can hear a definite valve tappet sound coming from my 1.6 L Chevette engine. Sometimes it goes away when I slow down, other times, I have to stop, and shut off the engine for a few minutes. I did a valve job three years and just under 2000 miles ago. I ran a can of Rislone to the oil, and drove about 200 miles before changing the oil. That didn’t seem to help.
Might try a quart of trans fluid mixed with the oil. Run at operating temp for about 20 min and then drain. The tranny fluid is a very good cleaner of the small clearances of the lifters. Tranny fluid is auto tranny type.
Dick, when mine did that ,,,after changing the oil it still taped i tryed Gumout flush no help I replaced the tapets ,,,,,, that did it . no more taping .. Dan
It seems that all agree that the lifters probably need replacing. I think that I did this once about 30 years ago on a 1.6L. The only reason that it took all afternoon was that someone brought a case of beer. Not a big job to replace methinks. (Assuming the above clean/lube techniques don’t do the job.)
