My 2c: I don’t think that anyone was making a kit in 1957 and that surely isn’t an MGA so you might want to be careful that it has a good title. (I have many other words of advice due to my recent experience here.) Those look like new(er) 100 spoke Dayton wheels that are certainly way oversized and probably have Dayton adapters behind them to adapt to the VW pattern and they make its stance even wider. I would guess that its about 5-6 inches over normal width. It may steer like a truck. (The wheels would run about $2000 if you were to buy them.) Seats look a bit ratty and I doubt there is a top. (About $1000) I wouldn’t be surprised if it were owned or at least driven by a young person (big speaker behind seat). Might be a good car – don’t know what body work it needs. Offer $2000 after a compression test and a test drive. Good luck.
December 3, 2012 at 9:41 pm #253014I think it may be a Fiberfab. Looks like a dual port engine which would make it a 1600cc (or larger if it has been reworked). Needs a new Motormeter “radiator cap”($100+/-). Maybe I’m being a bit overly critical.
December 3, 2012 at 10:10 pm #253015$4000 is too much. Way too much.
I think the ’57 in the headline is referring to the year of the car copied. It is still wrong, but the seller is trying. Roy’s correct. There were no fiberglass TD kits in 1957. 😉
Just based on the engine’s appearance…I’d wager Ed’s next paycheck that is a stock 1600cc engine with no work done to it at all.
Wheels are nice…but to my taste…not nice for on a TD. Hundred spokes are ok for a 64 Chevy lowrider! (Just my opinion!!) And they really screw up the track width on this car.
The condition of the engine makes me wonder what is under the car. Is teh VW pan as bad looking as the engine bolted to it?
And what the heck is going on with the radiator cap?
And crap like this “SERIOUS BUYERS,NO TIRE KICKERS,NO LOW BALLERS” in an ad gets my goat. The seller is asking too much, and then insults anyone who might otherwise have made a reasonable offer.
What do you guys think, $1,000? $1,500? I’m sorry, does that make me a low balling tire kicker?
And then sell the wheels for $500 (which is pretty inexpensive).

December 4, 2012 at 12:36 am #253019Interesting…
Hate the “artsy” pictures. But the car seems to be pretty clean

December 4, 2012 at 7:37 am #253020OK, the first one is Schubert’s car, right down to the wheels. But Cletus owns it instead of Dale, so it looks like it does. Schu says the ride with coil overs and the track and handling with the wheels is much better than stock, and I have no reason to doubt him. The wheels are a plus. The price is too high and since it’s multiples of what’s right you’re not getting anywhere with him. Unless you want to show up at the house with $1,000 cash and flash it. That might work. Or it might get you mugged.
That ebay one looks promising. The photo effects are there to obscure surface rust or chrome pitting, I suspect. But if you can live with that stuff (and I’m here to attest that it doesn’t make a lick of difference outside a judged event), then it’s a car to bid on.
December 4, 2012 at 11:06 am #253021I agree the ebay one is an auction to watch. And a car worth bidding on. It’s still at $965 with five days to go.
I disagree the seller is hiding anything. I think he/she is just an idiot! It’s a really bad approach to advertising anything for sale. But…even with the sepia like effects, the major chrome parts(bumpers, grill, headlights) look to be in really good shape. If bumpers et al were corroded, you’d be able to tell. The close ups on the “radistor cap” and dash show some corrosion, but it’s minimal.I’d like to see engine pics too. And pan pictures.I sent the seller a request for real color pictures, and without the fish eye effect.PMOSSBERG2012-12-04 11:12:27

December 4, 2012 at 1:57 pm #253022The seller said they’d put up some natural color photos within a couple days.
I also asked about the engine (displacement? dual or single port?) and asked for a photo of the engine. Seller did not answer that yet.PMOSSBERG2012-12-04 13:57:44

December 4, 2012 at 7:01 pm #253023Question,do these kits use the heater channels ?? (don’t laugh ,and no SA comments)
December 4, 2012 at 7:48 pm #253024Do these TDs use heater channels? Well…not the actual VW heater channel that runs through the base of the body. VW based kits use the heat from the heat exchanger and duct it through the seat bases and out the front of the seat base. That’s if the use heat at all. Some folks in the hotter climates don’t use heat.

December 4, 2012 at 8:37 pm #253027Heat in Bridget is ducted through the center tunnel. The build book says send out through the outer channels though. There apparently are several ways to do it.
December 4, 2012 at 11:21 pm #253028I’ve never seen a VW based TD that had the outer channels in place.
They either run the heat tubes from the heater boxes directly under the seats, or into the center channel as Ed described. Frankly I prefer under the seats. Short run from boxes to interior (about a foot). And those short tubes are insulated. It would seem that you lose a lot of heat, running the hot air through the tunnel.
Tex, your comments are about the Craigs List car, right?
That tan and brown one on ebay could turn out to be a really good deal. It’s up to $1,325 as of 11:20 p.m. Dec 4. Still a steal at that price.

December 6, 2012 at 1:56 pm #253029The ebay seller added two engine pictures to the listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MG-TD-REPLICA-FIBERFAB-GREAT-CONDITION-LOOK-/261136772060?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3cccf6ebdcThe seller told me he acquired the car at an auction and does not know much about it.
He does not know the engine displacement. But just from it’s appearance, I’m guessing a stock, 1600cc dual port.Overall, I still think this car is a good buy. Auction is currently at a little over $1,400.PMOSSBERG2012-12-06 13:56:58
