Hello everyone! My name is Doug Willis, I hail from a small town called Dayton Indiana. Two days ago, I purchased a CMC MiGi II that has never been assembled. It has only been dry fitted to the (VW) chassis, but never bolted down.
My back ground you ask??? I am 47 years old. When I was in HighSchool, my father owned a company in Valparaiso Indiana called STG inc. Offically… it stood for Sigma Technoligies Group inc. but we always refered to it as “Screw The Government” inc. Well, STG inc. build FiberFab MiGi’s. In the two or so that we built them, we created some 24 MiGi’s in our little pole barn in the middle of nowhere…Over the years I stayed in the Aircooled VW scene, known as ZWBEETLE. I currently have two babies… A 72 Super named Sonshine and a bone stock 63 6 volt 40 hp. Beetle named GrandPa.In may of this year, my father passed away this may, harboring many ill feelings towards the bad business dealings he had with his brother over the demise if STG inc. I thought it would be fitting to make my next car a MiGi and began an ernist search for one to buy. I had no Idea I would find one to buy that was still 95% un-assembled!I ran across one the other day that was purchased in 1988 and lost in storage until bought @ auction in 2008… The new owner had “High” expections of an easy build, but only tinkered over the last many years. Life changes forced the sale of the kit… Enter ME!!!Most of the chassis mods are complete already and the body is sitting on the chassis. I intend to remove it and give the chassis the once over and assemble this car the right way and give it the attention it truely deserves!!!I will attach a few pictures of the car as she sits now. I will also post up from time to time with new pictures of the buildIf I have questions, i hope I can get an answer ot two here.Hope to hear from other owners of these neat cars. AND if you have any information in your cars that says “STG inc.” It would be really super to hear from you as well!!!Until then… Keep the oily side down and the shiny side up!!Regards, DougHere is a picture of my other “aircooled” VW’sDecember 7, 2012 at 12:02 pm #253282I could use a stear in the right direction for a template for the seat bottoms and back… And the gauge set has been lost (or stolen) along the way… So I guess I need one of those as well. Thanks!

welcome aboardI know you will enjoy the knowlege and expertise of our club memners and we can gleam more info from your experience..We look forward to seeing your buildDecember 7, 2012 at 2:01 pm #253286Welcome aboard Doug. I purchased my 1st VW (a 76 Bus) from a friend in valpraiso. Drove the wheels off it for about 8 years and have stuck with vws ever since. I too have a CMC/Fiberfab unbuilt kit. You’ll have a blast building it. Like Larry mentioned, check the Download Manuals tab on the left. There are more than the CMC/FiberFab Assembly manuals and I would add to Larrys suggestion to glance through the other assembly manuals to get a fuller interpretation of how things get assembled or to fill in some blanks. In my manual they refer to attaching the seat cushions to the wood but left out the dimentions of the wood for the seat bases and seat backs. I found that in the London Roadster manual.
Any questions, feel free to ask. We’re all willing to help.Allen Caron

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackDecember 7, 2012 at 4:12 pm #253287Welcome to the club, Doug. That’s a great story about your father’s old assembly business.
You can find a nice selection of appropriate gauges at egauges.com.
If you want something a little different I can also recommend my way:
Get a stock Beetle speedo and a 5″ tach from Classic Instruments or another maker. The TDs has larger gauges than most kit makers included, and getting the aftermarket speedo to work off the front wheel cable was often a chore. I used a whiteface gauge sticker on mine. I’m thinking about having one custom made locally to match the fonts in the tach better. The stock fuel gauge included in the speedo is a plus.
For the center cluster, you can make something or hit ebay for an original TD cluster. They come up every few months and usually go for anywhere from $75 to $120, depending on condition. They are easy to recondition.
Look forward to watching your build come together.

December 7, 2012 at 6:22 pm #253289Welcome Doug. Regarding gauges, last year at Carlisle, I spoke with Mike Kollar from VDO. Nice guy 610-289-0488 ext 3017. Most of our TDr gauges are VDO and they make a nice selection. True, as Ed says they are smaller than TD gauges. But they look pretty good. The Chrome series with the red needles and black faces are quite popular as are the Classic series.
