OK… So I have this new project… Here are a few pictures of the day I brought her home and also a few of the interior bits and pcs.
I will post more photos of the progress of the build. I will start by removing the body and giving the chassis and engine the attention it rightfully deservesAlso attached is a 40hp 6 volt angine I recently rebuilt for my 63 VWEnjoy, and stay tuned…..And here is the engine from my 63… This is what my plans are for this project!More to come…….December 11, 2012 at 8:41 am #253322As you can see from the above pictures, the P.O. did not follow any instructions, he just fitted parts together… Guess he could not read… lol
December 11, 2012 at 9:15 am #253323That engine is beautifully done!

December 11, 2012 at 11:06 am #253324I had to look twice to see anything obviously wrong. One thing I noticed is that the front edges of the bonnet sides look like they are straight up/down instead of slanted back about 7 degrees to match the lines on the radiator shroud. Also looks like the passenger door is not quite flush. I’m sure anyone that does meticulous work like that engine shows, can easily fix all those fine points. My kit, likewise, is really a sloppy fit and will require a lot of “adjustments”.
Enjoy…..December 11, 2012 at 11:27 am #253325As you can obviously tell this is only being held together with a few nuts and bolts. I removed the drivers side fender because it would have never made the trip home w/out falling off.
I fear that I will have to fill a few mis-drilled holes after I start the “fit and finish”. But a know a really good “glass man” who own a boat repair shop. He also does top work, so the snaps should look perfect on the top and side curtains. Thanks for the complements on the engine… My wife says I have C.D.O. (It’s the same as O.C.D. but put in the correct order) I am quite the perfectionist. Here is a picture of the engine installed: (I know this isn’t a VW site, but then again it is kinda )December 12, 2012 at 2:01 pm #253326Alrighty then… Time to tap the well and see if I cal gleem any knowledge based experiance..
I am trying to kill some time on a really cold day, and don’t want to run up my heat bill in the barn. So… I brought a few things from the kit indoors to play around to see if there are some things I can do for prep work that won’t affect the building process, or make it go a little easier. Most all of the “extra” add-ons in this kit have some sort of “Addendum” instruction page associated with it. Except for the seats and door cards. My instructions show the seats already assembled, and just show the installation into the car. My kit has the seats “unassembled” completely. (covers and precut foam) However, I do not have the wood bases or wood back for either. I do not have the wood/cardboard for the door cards either.Did anyone here have the kit arrive with the seats unassembled? And if so, did the kit originally have plywood cutouts ready for assembly? Or did they come with a template to cut your own?I know… lots of questions… I do tend to ramble…If there is a template out there, I’d sure like to get my hands on one and do this myself. I could take it to an interior guy, but I’d prefer to do it myself to take ownership of the work, (and safe alot of $$$).Any help would be much appriciated!Regards, DougDecember 12, 2012 at 2:02 pm #253327AND… why do I get this message every time I post???

My kit came unassembled like yours and did not have the wood bases OR foam. Click on the download manuals tab on the left and then click on agree. Then click on the Ford Pinto based TD part 2. From there go to pages 71 and 72 and you get the dimensions to cut the wood for the seat bases and seat back. All are 3/4-inch plywood.newkitman2012-12-12 14:16:50

December 12, 2012 at 2:38 pm #253330Thanks newkitman! I looked there, but not at the Pinto based kit!
December 12, 2012 at 2:49 pm #253331Perfect! I’m gonna use marine grade plywood.
December 12, 2012 at 3:19 pm #253332Doug,
The pattern for the seat bases appears to be 1/2-inch larger all around than the shape of the foam cushion. Do you have the dimensions of the foam that you could post? It would help me and the others building their TDs from the start.Allen Caron

December 12, 2012 at 4:14 pm #253334OK, I do not have my camera here @ home, but here is a crude “paint document” with the dementions. Obviously to get the other seat… you would flip it over and do a mirror…

December 12, 2012 at 5:55 pm #253335OK – if you are going to do this do yourself a huge favor and do a search on my fix and I think someone else did a seat fix to avoid DBS – ( dead butt syndrome ) that will happen to you if you sit on that plywood for more then 1/2 hour. Best fix I ever did on my car. I have pictures someplace on the thread as well. Good luck
December 12, 2012 at 6:11 pm #253336I suffered from DBS for quite a while riding to and from VA Beach on the stock seat setup last month.

Directions call for tracing around foam cushion then scribing a line 1/2 ” in from the drawn line. inner line is cut line. Cushion should be 1/2 ” larger than plywood base. Instructions also call for 3/8 ” ply. 3/4″ ply would be stronger and hold screws better.
Page 70 of same manual also has panel demensions for side panels. I would make cardboard pattern firsf to check fit.1/8″ Launa plywood from Big box store works well for the panel board. It is cheap and easy to work with. I would also make cardboard pattern to check fit. There are different demensions between kit manfactures.December 12, 2012 at 9:58 pm #253338Here is schu’s seat cushion fix:

December 12, 2012 at 10:27 pm #253339Sweet… There is always a way to make something better… I’ll post up what I come up with!
December 13, 2012 at 1:14 pm #253340I think I’m going to get wood that is 3/8-inch thick. Two seat bases and two more pieces to fabricate the seat fix SCHU came up with. Let’s see…one 4’x8′ sheet would do the trick. Total wood thickness would end up 3/4-inch. Probably go with 3/4-inch thick wood for the seat back.

With the increased cold, my time in the barn grows shorter until the thawing of spring time, save for the few days warm enough to use my tiny heater to keep my toes and fingertips from frostbite! As I dig further into this project, I am finding a few more things that have gone missing over the many years of being moved from place to place.Since the body had been placed on the chassis, I assumed the “metalwork” had already been added to the chassis as well… My mistake!Attached is the “Metal Box 44-0425-00” identification page. I am missing the largest piece. part number 44-0420-00 “TD VW Rear Main Bumper Bracket”.If there is anyone here who has not assembled their kit, could you please let me know. I’d like to get the demensions and what size stock is used so I can fabricate one myself. Pictures would also be very nice! You can PM me and I will provide my email address!Again, thanks for all the help with the questions so far! I’m sure there will be more to follow!Regards, DougSTG-inc.2012-12-17 10:58:45
