Insltlled new brake drums and shoes all around. Not a problem up front but very tight in the rear. All brake adjusters are backed all the way out and the e-brakes are NOT set. Had a hard time getting the drum to fit over the shoes ending up using a mallet to get the drums to fit. Will they loosen up once I get the car rolling or will I have to get thinner brake shoes?

January 13, 2013 at 5:04 pm #253853You should not have to resort to using a mallet to install your drums. Make sure the wheel cylinders are not seized keeping the shoes from retracting all the way.

"Drive Happy"January 13, 2013 at 6:26 pm #253854Everything in or on the chassis is new. Complete rebuild from the ground up. Brake adjusters are all the way in and still had the problem. Looked like the material on the shoes was a tad thick. I’ll check tomorrow and see what NAPA has. Might just be that the brake shoes need to be replaced.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 15, 2013 at 9:23 am #253855Last night I pulled the rear brake shoes on one side and checked the thickness of the shoe material and the metal plate. Turns out the metal plate that holds the brake shoe material is quite a bit thicker than the original shoes. So new shoes will be purchased this afternoon on the way home. O’Reilley’s has the correct shoes in stock. I’m pretty sure this will fix the rear brake drum fit problem.
