    Today i was talking to a vw guy and he had an interesting question.I always assumed that my cars engine being a factory bilt car they took the engine out of a wrecked car redid it and installed it in my LR.He says maybe they had a engine source in europe or mexico that still made them in 1985.Whats you guys take on this.I can understand a home built car might come from a donner car but factory bilt would mean lots of vw without engines and tranys to get rid of

    It was my understanding that factory built TDs came with new VW engines.  If the kit was purchased and built by someone else, – who knows?  I’d bet that most of them were taken from donor VWs.  Your engine serial # which is under the generator stamped on the support should give you a clue as to whether it was new or not.

    Here’s a link to the engine letter cove for vw engines from the samba. maybe this will get you headed in the right direction.

    @jebarry

    The LR don’t (at least mine doesnt) have a serial number ( in the usual place). .

    How about yours Greg,  Larry or any other  LR owners have any  input..Is it because it has been upgraded to a 1776 cc(?)

    All factory blocks WILL have a serial number stamped into the casting under the generator mount.

    If you don;t have that, then it’s not a block out of a donor car.
    My bet is it is an aftermarket block, possibly Brazilian or Mexican.

    Might it be a type 2 (bus) VW engine. The location of the engine serial number. Its located on the splitline of the engine case up by the distributor.
