Hi folks,
Just wanted to thank everyone on the site, especially Roy, for help getting into the Small British Car world. As I was searching, I found a 1959 Bug Eye Sprite for sale less than 10 miles from my house, which was really amazing, about as amazing as the car!! I am planning on going to Carlisle in May for the first time as a newbie Sprite owner. Any suggestions as to lodging would be appreciated. I understand that the hotels fill up pretty quickly. Also, any thoughts on flat towing a car like my Bugeye vice trailering the car? The seller of the Sprite is a metal fabricator and has offered to build a trailer for me. But that adds at least another 1100 pounds or so to the total to be towed by my Ford Ranger and I’m wondering about how others are transporting their prized rides. Thanks again for all the welcomes and help. Later, HappyJackFebruary 16, 2013 at 7:32 pm #254545Congrats, Jack. Hope to see you in Carlisle.
Not sure about flat towing the Bugeye since it’s not a Bug. No chance you’ll drive it? There is a Speedster caravan coming north & I’m sure they would welcome you.
February 16, 2013 at 7:41 pm #254546Well guys, we almost had another TD replica owner. My friend Jack (Happy Jack) and I went to look at a ’59 Bugeye Sprite today and it was just too nice and too good a deal to pass up. So, if he can figure out where to stay, he says that he will see us all in Carlisle in May. Many moons ago (1963), I weighed about 170# and my very first sports car was a ’59 Bugeye that I loved. Now, I barely fit. They are uniquely small fun cars. An exceptionally quick go cart with a license plate and in the true British fashion, you don’t get wet driving it (unless, of course, it’s raining). I am so happy that he bought it, because if he had not, – I would have.
February 16, 2013 at 8:32 pm #254547Jack, just doing a little research. I happen to have a boat and a trailer. The boat weighs 1500 lbs or so and with the boat removed I can pick up the trailer by myself and move it into the middle of a parking space–and often need to do so.
Your Bugeye weighs less than 1500 lbs so the trailer that carries it should not need to weigh any more than 500 lbs. I don’t know if you could legally get away with a lawn equipment trailer like these but whatever you end up with I can’t see it weighing anything close to 1,100 lbs.
Probably not even half that.
