Spend yesterday in their TD?
It was about 80 degres in Baltimore. The cherry blossoms are blossoming. I adjusted B’s brakes the other night and took her to work yesterday, drove to an interview and, after work, went to pick up a disc brake kit (still in box) a local VW-head had for sale. About 80 miles, all told.
In the city it was the usual: every third person telling me they like the car. At the interview, which was in a complex, we came out after and found a mother and her four-year-old son hovering over the car. “He loves race cars,” she said.
On the way to the VW guy a dude pulled along side and asked if I did the restoration myself. “I like TR3s,” he said. “So do I,” I said.
At the VW guy another guy came over and talked for a while about his friend who’d bought a ’33 TA back in the day, sold it, unrestored, years later and this guy I was talking to ran into that guy on a job. “I didn’t think there were many of these around,” he said.
Got home after dark. She’s running pretty good but I still get a pop on decel and a good backfire if I get on it hard and then get right off it (like one does during autoX). Gotta tighten all the bolts on the intake and exhaust, see if there’s a leak maybe?
Or adjust the carb again….
April 10, 2013 at 9:44 am #255394Ed,
A local VW engine builder ( helped me build both my engines ) buys and rebuilds all types of vw carbs. He pulls them all apart cleans and replaces anything that needs fixing and look like new when he is done. If you have a interest I could check w/ him and see if he has a replacement in case yours is a carb issue. I think his price is below 50.00 ( or at least it was ). Let me know if this fills a need and I will inquire.April 10, 2013 at 12:40 pm #255395By the Way – I will be out today w/ my ride when I get home – 90 degrees today? Crazy. I need to find that empty parking lot and practice – so far everything is being used – park&ride and the schools are still open for a while.
April 10, 2013 at 2:08 pm #255396Yeah, most schools discourage autocrossing through the schoolyard Schu!

April 10, 2013 at 3:16 pm #255397is that verboten? or just, ya know, frowned upon?
Schu, thanks for the carb contact. My carb is pretty new so I doubt a rebuild is called for. Engine, yeah…carb, no… But who knows?
She runs plenty good on the street and only pops loud occasionally. Usually the downshift results in (to me) a pleasing burble. Only on the autoX do we get that rifle shot effect, which I’m trying to avoid this year.
April 10, 2013 at 7:24 pm #255398Ed. I had the same problem with a backfire when down shifting or going down hill in 3rd. She would backfire after building up some compression. If I accelerated in 2nd gear hard and then let up on the accelerator it backfired real loud like a gunshot. I was just at my mechanics place and asked what he did to get rid of that. He said i had an exhaust leak at the heater boxess. He put in a heater box repair kit on both sides and that took care of it. By the way I’m having major work done on the frame. Frame head, pans and numerous other items.
April 10, 2013 at 9:15 pm #255399exhaust leak in the heater boxes eh? That sounds credible. Thinking this would be at the doughnut connection?
April 11, 2013 at 3:15 pm #255400That’s correct Ed. They make a kit to repair that if that is where it is leaking.
April 11, 2013 at 5:16 pm #255401Good information. Thanks
April 11, 2013 at 7:15 pm #255402A while back Hot VWs (I think) had an article on how to make the ends of the muffler that clamps to the heat exchanger the same as the ones that connect to the cylinder head. I know I’m not explaining it correctly but basically on a stock muffler one flange bolts to the exhaust outlet of #2 and #4 cylinders. The part that connects to the heater boxes was different. Anyway…this article shows how to make all connections to the muffler the same type. Pretty slick if I recall. I’ll see if I can find it and scan it in and post it if anyone would like.
