Hi, I tried putting them on, one cold am, and realized the passenger has to get in and then buttoned and zipped. Then I realized, after I got in , that I had to ask a passer by to push on snaps on windscreen side frame. Well, then we eventually had to get out. Is there something I’m missing here? Dennis P
July 10, 2013 at 2:47 pm #256972Dennis, you seem to have found the Achilles’ Heel of TD replicas. Getting yourself inside and closed up to the weather is so cumbersome, it is quite laughable. You can take some comfort in knowing that if you succeed to get the curtains on, they are much more “weatherproof” than original TD side curtains are.
This tool makes it much easier: http://www.sailrite.com/Top-Snapper-ToolJuly 10, 2013 at 2:51 pm #256973Ditto what Roy said. I have the same tool.
Another manufacturer difference…Classic Roadsters Ltd.’s Duchess side curtains have a long zipper under the window. You can put your arm through to snap the curtain to the windshield frame. Then zip it closed. Was also useful for paying tolls in the pre EZ-Pass days.Paul Mossberg

You can grab the female part of the snap and manuveur it onto the male snap. It’s also good for unsnapping, especially where the male fittings are screwed into the fiberglass. The tool keeps you from pulling the snaps out of the fiberglass.Paul Mossberg

July 10, 2013 at 5:18 pm #256976Or, you could just do what some of us did and buy a Lafer. 🙂

July 11, 2013 at 1:06 pm #256980Has anyone built a hardtop for our cars? In my climate we don’t get that many days that are really suited to open top driving!
July 11, 2013 at 1:14 pm #256981My Fiberfab has a velcroed flap on the bottom that is supposed to allow you to reach out and snap the snaps on the door. In my case I guess I would attach the top of the side curtian zipping it part way, then snap the front snap on the windshield frame and the other frame snaps, complete zipping the side curtain closed and then reach through the bottom flap and snap the top to the doors. To get out is the reverse of getting in. Have I got that correct?

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 11, 2013 at 1:25 pm #256982I bought my first MGT in 1968 while living in Rhode Island. So, I figgered that I would assemble my normal top, lay Saran Wrap or something similar over it and then lay fiberglass cloth over that. I figured that the fiberglass would not adhere to the Saran Wrap, but so what if it did? Then I would carefully remove the fiberglass top-shaped enclosure and add stiffeners and more fiberglass here and there as the top demanded.
This fiberglass top idea has been on my To-Do list now for 45 years. …and it’s almost worked it’s way to the top. But, now I’m almost 72, live in NC and I just can’t get excited about it (or much of anything, for that matter). So, I would appreciate it if whoever has done this would post so I can cross it off my list for (at least) having thought about it for 45 years. (I ought to get partial credit on this project for simply having pondered of it for so long, don’cha think? Julie says that pondering is one of my rare talents.)July 11, 2013 at 1:30 pm #256983Here’s a like to a TD on the samba that’s for sale and has a removable hard top. Looks to be made from fiberglass from the photo so it can and has been done.

Nice job, Roy.
July 11, 2013 at 3:01 pm #256985So now here I am, proud as a peacock……..as another item gets crossed off my list, Volume XXXI page 633. Thanks Allen and Ed, couldn’t have done it without your support. And Julie says I never do anything. Hah!

July 11, 2013 at 6:42 pm #256987A fellow Rhode Islander, Royal! Congrats on escaping. LOL What I wouldn’t give to find one of those hardtops in a garage somewhere. Of course, the person that assembled my car figured that heat was unnecessary and removed all the components. That would probably be a good first step to fall driving.
July 11, 2013 at 7:33 pm #256988Roy I reread your post and ya know what? You’re quite the ponderer. 5 stars for pondering.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJuly 11, 2013 at 9:46 pm #256989No, Paul, I’m not spoiled. After driving the Lafer around in Houston heat and humidity for a while, though, I do tend to smell that way. 😉
In all seriousness, though, even though the Lafer has tempered glass windows that slide down into the doors, I’ve only had them on maybe four times in the six years I’ve owned the car — and one of those times was when it was in the trim shop to have a new top made.1981 Lafer TI
1600 cc Type 1 engineJuly 11, 2013 at 9:54 pm #256990Bill, just curious, when installed do your semi-normal windows they do a good job on keeping the rain out? How about the noise?
July 12, 2013 at 12:54 pm #256991Sorry, Roy, but I’ve never driven in the rain with the windows fitted. In fact, I’ve only been caught in the rain twice, and only one of those times did it come down hard enough to even turn on the wipers (which do work, but seem to have only two speeds: slow, and slower).
As for noise, mine is not an especially quiet ride at any time.
