I used STP in a clapped-out ’62 Austin-Healy Sprite that I drove in college, and it kept the idle oil pressure up until I could afford to have the engine pulled and rebuilt. Had the consistency of honey. Haven’t used it since, though. What are you trying to achieve?

Bill, like you, I have used STP.  I was taught to use it as an assembly lube when rebuilding engines and have used it since the 1950’s.  There probably is better stuff, but that’s what I was taught and I am exceptionally gentle and careful when first rolling an engine over.

I too, wonder what Greg is trying to accomplish with additives.  I have always believed them to be unnecessary.  (I used straight 50 weight for a while in my ’59 Bugeye, before rebuilding.)

Not really trying accomplish anything . Happened to be a Monroe Muffler shop started talking to a guy who told me he always uses LUCAS oil treatment in his 57 chevy and he swears by it. He said he was burning oil now he not. Car runs better and is also cooler. We also talked about STP He says lucas is a lot better . He also said he would run 20W 50 in my VW . When I came home I looked it on Ron and Dave’s VW and they suggest 20w 50 or a straight 30

In my youth I had an air cooled Corvair (America’s VW) that would be noisy until I started adding STP. It made a noticeable difference in valve train noise. Nowadays I prefer Sea Foam to quiet an engine.

I’ve heard other guys talk about Sea Foam, but have never tried it myself.
