Has anyone tried to fit a hideaway muffler to their VW TDr?  Will it fit under the right rear fender?

I’m going to replace my exhaust and looking for an extractor-type, if possible, to avoid the restrictiveness of the “monza-type” exhausts without being so obviously VW…
I don’t really want the obviousness of the normal quiet pack (whether single or dual), and the popular (here) Empi single-tip Monza-type likely robs 1-3 HP with its restrictiveness at higher RPM…
I’m putting together a “wish list” for my engine build when I replace my 1500SP…

    Hey Kentt,

I finally got rid of the Pfat Boy and put on a hide-away muffler on Emma (~$75 + ~$20 shipping)….had to take it to the muffler shop and have the input pipe shortened and a mount ear for the front end of the muffler installed.  $85 later, I’m driving around in a car with more power and less noise (until I “mash the pedal” — as they say down South).  The Pfat Boy was supposed to be non-restrictive but the car did not seem to like going anything but wide open with that muffler — and it was not very drivable on normal roads like that……too loud in the neighborhood and too obviously a hot rod on the highway……
But after the refitting and cutting of the pipe attaching to the merged header, the muffler guys were able to fit the muffler higher up and clear of the frame obstruction at the front of the muffler.  Here’s some pics  — I have an EMPI 3699 1 5/8″ merged header and j-tubes on the car so I had to go with the EMPI 3700 hide away muffler.  EMPI makes them in various styles for various exhaust configurations — street headers, heater boxes, etc.  The muffler is nice and quiet at slow speeds and highway speeds  — nice and sedate — until you step on the gas and then it roars nicely as the car jumps forward–fast…!!!.  Best investment I’ve made to date in upgrading Emma.
    stock hideaway (iPhone sideways version…)
shortened input pipe on hide away
stock length hits the cross frame and does not tuck up high enough
muffler now clears cross member and is tucked up nice and high

exhaust pipe runs aft alongside the muffler and exhausts straight down — keeps the noise down on the street and not straight out the rear of the car — works well…!!!  some day I’ll figure out why some pictures show up in the reply box on edge and some right-side-up…

    Well done, Jack.  Handshake

Now I know what mods are likely going to be required for mine — though I don’t have the merged header, only the extractor on high-performance heater boxes…
