A couple of the Speedster guys are heading over to Lime Rock in a few weeks for the historic race/show there. I’m thinking of trying to make the run up for Saturday. Maybe get in the British car paddock (supposedly adjacent to the Porsche paddock. They say if you spend the $15 to get in there you can also run a parade lap on the track.

Still working on getting Bridget ready for any kind of regular driving but really want to try to get ther for this one. Anyone else want to go for it?
For those down in the NJ/PA/MD area, I was thinking of running up on Friday afternoon/evening, 95 to the Garden State parkway, Tappan-Zee over to CT and dropping in on my mom in Milford. I’d be an hour and a half from the park then. If I had a wing man or two I might try to run Bridget up instead of towing her…

I have finagled not working Saturdays for most of the summer. That is a weekend I start again. Can’t make the run with you, but if you need a garage or a beer stop on in on your travels.

Might be up for it Ed – I need to check mileage and see if it is possible for me.

I also need to verify my rebuilt engine and carbs and brakes are all good – so a long cruise here is something I need to do. It is Saturday – Labor day weekend?
If I tow I need to do more work because my Honda Element is no more and would have to install a new tow system on one of my cars. We will see.

Be great if you could make it. We could both go up rickety & w/ fingers crossed.

It’s Thursday 8/28 through Monday 9/1. I’m looking at maybe a Friday run (or tow) and Saturday at the park. Sunday looks tempting though as well. Hell of a car show. Ralph Lauren has cars we can’t even look at, usually.
Danny P. and some of the Speedster guys usually go.
Anyway. I hope to spend a few days in CT and catch up w/ family. Maybe drive back home Tues or Weds to continue the build.

Spent Saturday at Lime Rock. So, bad news first.  Around 3 pm this dude crashed his MG P special, and we later heard he had died.

Looks like he flipped it. I saw none of it, as I was on the other side of the track. I did not even know there was a death until this a.m.
30-some years of this fest and no one ever died before, so this is a big, big deal.
The good news: it was an amazing day, beautiful weather, sweet people and the nicest racing setup I have ever seen. you drive in and park, and you can walk–or take a free golf cart shuttle–to anywhere you want: pits, corrals, the big hill across the bridge from which you can see the whole main straight and the S-curves. I went down and watched the starting lineups.
Just before the first race of the morning I spotted a guy in a Morgan setting air in his trires. the wheels on the car were VW 8-slot.
    que?
He says they’re stronger than the original Morgan steelies (and of course stronger than the spokers) and the bolt pattern is the same so of course there is a guy in California who, for substantial money, will reset the offsets to make the VWs a good fit for racing.
How about that? (Here’s a link to some photos of the original Morgan wheels. I believe they are 16-inch, not 15, and the offset looks a little deeper than our VWs. But the 15-holes and smaller dog-dish hubcaps are almost exactly like the TD).
Eyes open I saw at least one other Morgan set the same way.
Saw an indy car with a real live Offenhauser. He was running it. Couple giant Stutz straight 8s, and a Bently.
Got to take a parade lap in Danny Pipperato’s Spyder (right seat, of course). I would have got a parade lap in Bridget if I had brought her. (Just before I left Baltimore on Friday her brand new water pump failed, so . . . ).
Food’s OK. Beer is OK, plenty of port-o-lets and it looked like there were real flush toilets in one building (I didn’t go).
I definitely plan on going back next year. I might go back Monday for that day’s races.
Highly recommend if you’ve never been. Expect next year they will tighten the rules, maybe more roll bars (the man who crashed had a very low one that would not have passed SCCA tech, imho). They were also very loose on the “parade lap,” which had a posted speed limit of 35 mph. The whole line would accordion down at 20, 15, 0 mph and then blast off. Danny hit two sets of turns doing at least 75, as appears to be the tradition. No one even yelled at us.
So two hours before a guy lost his life on the no-name turn, I was probably going through it faster. Sobering.
Looking more seriously at fitting a roll bar to Bridget.

Great read! I sat down with my cup of coffee and enjoyed your report before I left for Church. I felt like I was there too. I liked your reporting better than my Sunday Times.
thanks for sharing your experience with us! Sure wish I could have joined you!

    Hey Ed,

Great post !!  Sounds like you were able to combine family time with time at a classic race venue…..Maybe next year we can get a group of TDrs up there — Let’s see — Carlisle in May, Lime Rock in September, and Air Museum/Va Beach in October…Any takers?????

    Great write up Ed.

    Thanks!

Interesting info on the Morgan wheels. You are right on the 16 inchers, BUT……

October 1958: The last Vanguard-engined Plus 4 was produced. The road
wheel size (Previously 16″) is reduced to 15″ and 60 spoke wire wheels are
    offered as an optional extra.

Found that on this site: http://www.team.net/www/morgan/history/4wheels.html

If the bolt pattern stayed the same, these might offer both steel and wire options! I’m not going to $peculate on the price tho! Maybe trade our humble VW wheels to a Morgan owner that wants to go racing? 🙂
